Default Upgrading from 3.1.3 to unlock

I have iPhone 3G 16gb that I need to unlock, iphone is currently 3.1.3 and when i try to upgrade to 4.2.1 using itunes 10.2.1, it says something along the lines of 'requested build iphone cannot be restored' FWIW i have tons of iphones because i sell used, and i have always been able to upgrade FW to 4.2.1, I never got this 'requested build' error. Any clues?

Or could I simply update bb on 3.1.3 to 06.15.00??

    Thanks friends!

Sounds like you're trying to get a build that either apple isn't signing anymore or that you have made. Are you updating to a custom firmware because that requires you to be in dfu mode.

Oh also, what is your baseband because if you have the 3.1.3 baseband you won't need the 06.15 iPad baseband which is better for you. Do you know what is currently in the phone? If you could possibly preserve the baseband that comes with 3.1.3 I would.

Yeah but you don't need to do that! You will have 05.12.01 which is unlockable. If you don't want to update just jailbreak with jailbreakme.com and unlock with ultrasn0w. The iPad baseband has known issues that I would avoid if you can and you definitely can.

If you do want to update, you'll want to make a custom firmware that'll preserve your baseband. Is that what you want to do?
