3GS Jailbroken at 4.0.1, Best Route To Upgrade? To What?

Hey, so I've been out of the scene since I originally jailbroke my 3GS, now I want to get back into it. However, I'm wondering what the best route to go about upgrading it is? Are there options? I looked through the guides but found nothing on upgrading from 4.0.1 up, only upgrading to 4.0.1. Any help is greatly appreciated! I love this forum!

EDIT: I'm upgrading in hopes of improving my phone connection. Here at work the phone is either 'searching...', or FULL BARS.. go figure...

youd want to go to 4.3.1. if your on mac use pwnage tool/windows use sn0wbreeze. but first llug in your device and run a program called tiny umbrella(or was t firmware umbrella now? same thing), and see if you are hashed for ios 4.3.1. if you are, use the method above to go o it (saves your baseband so your device has a higher reaell value).

if TU says you do no have ios 4.3.1, upgrade to the last one it says you have (4.1,4.2.1).

make sure it both cases, which ever route you go, to also click save shsh in TU for evry new ios that come soutfrom now till doomsday. also ensure your host file is pointed to sauriks server (TU should do this after you open/exit it)

Couple questions, do you have a mac or a windows machine and do you want to preserve your baseband so you can unlock the phone to use with another gsm provider?

If I was you I would make a custom firmware with either sn0wbreeze or pwnageTool depending on if you have a mac or windows. Create a custom firmware using 4.3.1 (you can download that here), that is the most recent firmware that has an untethered jailbreak. Make sure if you use AT&T that you uncheck the option that says "activate" in pwnagetool (and maybe snowbreeze i'm not sure). Then backup your iphone in iTunes and restore using the custom firmware you created and that should be it. You wont need to jailbreak since the custom firmware does that for you.
