^That is for Tiny Umbrella. Check the file, the host file permissions, the one Tiny Umbrella wants to modify.

^That looks like mine - and should work.

An idea. Open a cmd.exe window with Administrator rights, then open hosts with your favorite editor. Delete a space, add a space, then try to write the file. Error? If this works, then I'm at a loss.

If you have access to a different computer, give it a try. If it works maybe you can determine the differences and effect a change.

Once you enter in the numbers, hit tab on the keyboard, then type in gs.apple.com
Try and save the file, if you get an error, then you have a permissions problem clearly.

OK I ran it on my girlfriend's computer, here is the log for TU:

04/22/2011 12:11:34.333 You are using the current version of TinyUmbrella.
    04/22/2011 12:11:34.338 Loaded History...

Uh oh... does this mean it's hopeless...?

    ---------------------------------

    EDIT

OK I found a solution that got me to the black apple screen. This is what I did, just in case anyone has this problem in the future:

first download ipsw 3gs version4.1 ofw
    second download 4.1 cfw

    use redsnow9.6b6

run redsnow9.6b6 select ofw4.1 after patching kernel , just check pawned DFU only then proceed,,,wait until finish...
run itunes then restore your idevice using CFW 4.1.....

if it is factory unlock :
after restore , acitvate frist using own simcard..

then Jailbreak using redsnow9.6b6 select ofw 4.1 , then check cydia and ipad baseband then proceed..
after jb unlock thru wifi ....if it is lock yet....
I was able to follow all the steps. I updated the phone to 4.1, it shows up in iTunes, and I can sync it in iTunes (added 1GB of music just to test). However, the phone never goes to homescreen. It is stuck on the black screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel, but it never gets to the lockscreen even. What can I do to make it get to homescreen? I have tried hard resetting (home+power button for 10 seconds) but it simply gets stuck on Apple screen again.
