I have a 3g phone with 4.3.1 on it. what is the easiest way for a newbie to jailbreak the phone. The phone has never been jailbroke.

im pretty sure you cant update to 4.3..1 on a iphone 3g. so is it a 3gs or iPhone 4 you have
but imma guess it is 3gs. u can use pwnage on mac to jailbreak it and sn0wbreeze on windows

Do you mean 3GS? If not, how did you get 4.3.1 on a 3G iPhone?

U need two things:
- a copy of the 3GS 4.3.1 firmware (IPSW)

It's not a 3G if it is on 4.3.1, it stops at 4.2.1.

You can tell it is a 3GS if the text on the back of the phone is shiny silver and you have a compass app on your springboard.

if it is on 4.3.1 then yes it is a 3gs (assuming it has no front facing camera) if it does it is iPhone 4 lol

you can also time app loading times. 3G is 1.12 secs and 3GS is .8566 secs

You can it's a 3gs by looking at the back of the phone,if it's a 3gs the writing will be easy to read,if it is a 3g the writing will be hard to read,i.e it looks faded.

First off I would like to thank everybody for the quick responses and help that you gave me. I have a couple more questions for you. I have 2 more 3gs phones, the first one is mine and is already jailbroke at version 4.0.2. Would if be wise to update to an earlier software or leave it alone. If I did update do i have to reinstall all my apps again? Second phone is brand new today 3gs and it has 4.3 on it will the above solution jailbreak this phone. using redsnow 0.9.6rc12 and the 4.3.1 restore

For both phones, you can update to 4.3.2 and jailbreak w/ redsn0w RC14.

For the phone that is jailbroken, if you want to reinstall all if your Cydia apps then you need to get PkgBackup. It costs $8 and can be used on any device you sign-in on. It's well worth the money!!!

To use it:
Open it up
Let it scan your info
Press Backup
Then connect to iTunes
Backup AND Sync w/ iTunes

After the upgrade:
Jailbreak iPhones
Open Cydia and let it do it's startup thing
Install PkgBackup
Open PkgBackup
Choose Restore Tab at the bottom
Hit Restore

BTW, pkgbackup won't install the Cydia apps from your old 3GS to your new one. It's device specific (as far as I know!).

Will redsnow rc/14 also work with the 4g phone. As long as i get the ispw for the 4g wont it.

3G phone with 4.2.1. Is Jailbreak me able to do this version or was it for later versions. Is Apple still signing this version and if not, whats the asiest way to jailbreak it

Jailbreakme is for 4.0.1 down to 3.1.x. Doesn't work for 4.0.2 and up.

So I just download 4.2.1 ipsw and use the most recent version of redsnow
