What am I doing wrong?
Have iPhone 3gs with 3.1.3 JB. Updated iTunes to 10.2.1. Downloaded sn0wbreeze 2.5.1. Trying to upgrade to 4.3.1 with JB. Have the .zip file iphone2,1_4.3.1_8G4_restore.ipsw. Tried dragging it to sn0wbreeze. It doesn't drag. Just diappears as it crosses onto Sn0wbreeze screen. Then extracted contents and tried to drag--same problem. Then tried browsing--nothing. What am I missing?

you need to take the .zip off the extension for a start.
and what do you mean you are trying to drag it in to sn0wbreeze ?
just run the sn0wbreezw exe and follow the instructions.

The folder does have the .ipsw suffix. And it is zipped. I run
sn0wbreeze and it asks for the .ipsw file. There is no .ipsw file inside the restore folder. I extract the contents and repeat with the same result. I try to browse for it--no .ipsw file. Only the folder has the suffix. Never had this problem with previous JB.
Inside the .ipsw folder there are a bunch of files and two more folders. No .ipsw files inside. Again, what could I be missing?

it needs to be called .ipsw not
.ipsw.zip
if unsure download with Google Crome and save to your desktop.
the run Sn0wbreez and point it to the .ipsw then shift restore in iTunes when you have a CF to point iTunes too
If you dont need the unlock then redsn0w would be better for you as its easier to do.
look here iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.3.1]

The folder has only the .ipsw suffix, no zip. I point Snowbreeze or redsn0w to it and neither one recognizes it. As I said before, the restore.ipsw on my desktop is a folder with various files and stranges suffixes. There are no files with the .ipsw suffix in the folder or in the subfolders. Becoming very frustrating just to make a Custom 4.3.1 FW. Do you get this normally when you download the iOS 4.3.1?

No i dont have this problem.
If i was you i would download Google Crome and use that as your browser and go to iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.3.1] and you can download everything from there and jailbreak with redsn0w if you dont need the unlock.
I take it you downloaded the firmware with explorer ? its always better to download firmwares with Google Chrome
So you could re download the firmware and use sn0wbreeze or you could jailbreak with the link i have provided with redsn0w if you dont need the unlock
Let me know

OK. I am not getting the "white cube with musical notes and a picture of an iPod." I get a folder. Does that help you to help me?

The folder I have on my desktop exactly matches the folder name you have typed, pratt. I am now using Chrome to repeat the process on iclarified. Will let you know the results.

You don't want an expanded ZIP archive (like what you've got, it sounds like), you just want a .ZIP file that instead of ending ".zip" ends ".ipsw."
Chrome should be able to download the IPSW in the correct format, but if not, just compress the folder you've got now, and re-name the file extension without decompressing it.

I do have iTunes 10.2.1. Yes, I have what appears to be a "zip" folder but its suffix is .ipsw. There are no .ipsw files inside the folder. I am downloading it again using Chrome. iPhone2,1_4.3.1_8G4_Restore.ipsw
Will let you know. Thanks for the help so far.

You don't want anything inside the folder. You don't need to un-archive the file. Keep it compressed.
You want the ZIP archive, compressed, with a name ending in ".ipsw" that's what sn0wbreeze is looking for.

Got it to work with Chrome--thanks guys. Now another decision to make. 4.3.2 just cam out today (of course). I have redsn0w 0.9.6 RC12, which i was going to use to JB 4.3.1. Should I wait for the JB for 4.3.2 or will this version of redsn0w work once the .ipsw becomes available for the 4.3.2?

Just use redsn0w rc12 on the 4.3.1... don't worry about 4.3.2.
