iphone 3GS 3.1.3, and 5.12.01 - upgrade and retain unlock?
Hi,
I am a newb.
I was able to unlock my 3GS when a year or so ago when the 3GS unlock first came out.
Now I want to upgrade.
How far can I go? What tools do I need?
I do need the unlock, because I am using the phone on the Chatr (Roger's) network in Vancouver, B.C.
Many thanks,
DTH

Then you will want to make a custom 4.3.1 firmware with snowbreeze and restore to that in iTunes. That will preserve your baseband so that you can still unlock after.

One more request if I may:
My wife is running a 3GS with 4.0.1 and 5.13.04, and she uses a Mac.
Can I use the same process to update her phone via my windows machine, or do I need to do use her Mac with a different process/programs??

You can do the same process on windows. Though if you have a Mac I would suggest using pwnage tool instead of snowbreeze. It is a much more stable jailbreak.

PwnageTool is taking more than 30 minutes (almost 45 so far) to build the custom ipsw.
Is that typical?

No, that is not normal at all. What kind of Mac do you have and what version of OSX are you running?

iMac running OS X 10.5.8
Intel core 2 duo
2.4GHz
Memory 1GB
It has had some issues recently, with frequent spinning rainbow discs/pinwheels.
Due for a tune-up for sure.

That might be the reason. You may need a newer version of OSX.

Yup, if pwnage tool is giving you issues just do what you did before with your other one.
