Question How to completely wipe JB before a restore?

I seem to have issues with older files/programs/settings sticking around when I restore to 4.2.1, and then when I rejailbreak. I normally use pkgbackup, but this restore screwed up more than it fixed. Is there a quick and easy way to wipe out *all* settings/folders/programs (both related to the iphone, and to the jailbreak) so I can set up my phone and rejailbreak fresh? I am guessing a wipe will work, but dont want to go thru the hassle and then find existing JB folders still resident.

Can I just manually delete every visible folder in something like ifunbox, then do a restore?

    Thank you

Make sure you "RESTORE" and not UPDATE
SET UP as NEW iPhone Not from backup
in PKG make sure you select only necessary files (deselect all community repos, keep any extra manually added ones.)
That should give you a clean tidy fully working JB device (:
Being an i can be a lot of pressure. you have to live right up to the small point.

Also sync your contact, photos anything else you want to keep to your window or outlook, so that you can sync them back to you device after jb and new phone setup. The music files can be sync via itune, after you go over everything and you're happy with it then do a fresh backup and note the date so if you should need to restore again then you can use that new backup to restore!!

An example of a clean wipe/restore would be:

with your sluggish iphone use redsn0w w/ necessary ipa and enter pwnd DFU mode. Then use itunes and shift restore to a custom firmware. Your phone is now JB. Now in itunes, select 'set up as new phone' instead of 'use existing backup'

some people unplug their iphones from the pc while its jailbreaking before its over (which is fine), therefore Itunes never asks them if you want to set up as new phone...and thats okay to. You dont have to select set up as new phone if you never get asked. As long as you didn't sync with existing back up you're fine and you will have a clean restore.

    I disagree.

Running "iWipe" before and after the DFU restore is as clean as it gets without a magnet, an angle grinder, or hydrofluoric acid.

Thanks for the responses! - looks like this has been covered, but j00zl33t's method will also clear out the existing jailbroken apps, tweaks etc? I was surprised to see previous settings still resident when i reinstalled some JB programs after the last restore.

Thx again - been a lurker here for quite a while, appreciate the quick responses

usually when you restore your device, it wipes everything out including the jailbreak apps, if you do a restore from your backup (which i don't recommend) you will get most everything back provides you did a recent backup.... in your case i'm not sure what took place?

Typically when I upgrade I use tinyumbrella's method to retain the bb on my i4. I guess I'll try the redsnow way tonight...

I don't really need to restore my backup, only thing that is important are my contacts, everything else I can set up again. I didn't realize the jailbroken apps are included in an itunes backup.

hold on here skipy, redsnow does not preserve your bb, so unless you have a factory unlock device, look before you jump!! don't do it!! when ever you do a restore or update you will loose your jb apps itune will only save/sync apps from apple store... as i have indicated, open itune with device connected open info tab and sync your contact list to window's contact or outlook, after you have complete your task then set up device as "NEW" and sync the contact list back to your device

Holding. I was just on the devteams site - was going to post a follow up re: the baseband. Im on att, dont need the baseband but id like to keep it at 1.59 if possible for resale.

I'll set up as new after I've installed 4.3.1 via TU.

    thx!

I have noticed this sometimes as well. Always setting up as 'new'. It bugged me for awhile, but got over it
