That is what the "server" part of TU is for, to sign the old iOS when it's being loaded.

..... If it were me, start completely over (assuming I screwed up someplace) Sorry.

Another option: PM xcar98. He --IS-- the redsn0w expert on MMI and a nice guy too. Maybe he's monitoring this thread and will chime in.

I forgot, do you need to preserve the baseband/modem firmware for a non-authorized carrier unlock?

Hmmmmm So I NEED to have the server running when using redsnow? OK.. Didnt think or know i needed to. I was just going over the top of what was already installed, cept with a jailbreak.

No carrier unlock needed, so basebands being left alone. I don't wanna break the GPS or possibly the wireless.. Thats at 5.15.04

I believe it's only needed by iTunes during the software verification stage but it doesn't hurt anything and you're assure it's there if needed.

Hey.... just thought of something. 4.2.1 is the current iPhone iOS, right? In Redsn0w, are you selecting an Apple STOCK 4.2.1 iOS (not a custom one).

What redsn0w version are you using? I think the 4.2.1 version is: redsn0w_win_0.9.6b6.

Yep, using a stock ios download. Not direct from itunes, but one i grabbed from here, and another from iClarified. And yeah, that I know of, 4.2.1 is current on the 3g.. Ive tried redsnow versions from rc8 on up.

Hmmm, From what i read, and quite possibly misread, was that rc8 was the one to use.. Could be i was wrong.. Lemme grab the one u mention n see if it works..

    Stranger things have happened.. LOL!!

^rc8 probably works, but I'm not sure. My notes show it was downloaded 1/6/2011 (long before 4.3.1). rc9 appears to start 4.3.1.

Downloaded rc6 on 12/2/2010 so it's definitely for 4.2.1. Good luck

    x98car ... where are you? =D

    I have two suggestions:

    1. Start over. I mean really start over. TU + server, pwn'd DFU mode (via Redsn0w), iTunes restore stock 4.2.1 (no unlock needed), boot iphone, Redsn0w again, click activate, cydia and ?......

    .....or.....

    2. Ask x98car, the MMI redsn0w expert

    Sorry I couldn't help.

I know ill have to update itunes to do it, which is fine, but my question is this.. Will using it to do the 3g, fuxor MY 3gs stuff (games, apps music) in any way???

It shouldn't. But like anything, there's no guarantees. I took the plunge to iTunes 10x awhile back to do a 4.x load from old-reliable 9.x. During the same time, my hard disk was also updated. Didn't loose anything important, but several strange things had to be redone -- like re-authorizing computer in iTunes, old iPhone backups were gone, it appeared to freeze a couple times. Both my 3G (3.1.2) and 3GS (4.2.1) didn't remember was was sync'd and did it again. Worked, but geezze...... After all the 'little issues', I stopped syncing apps, music and videos and selected manually manage.

It's been two or three months now and things appear solid. Still manual sync on music/videos/apps. Never a problem with 3G/3GS iOS restores (3.1.2 -> 4.2.1).

I don't know what to tell you, but probably should take the plunge.

    My sync process is now:
    1. Right-click on iPhone, select backup.
    2. Right-click on iPhone, select transfer apps.
    3. Right-click on iPhone, select sync (only Info stuff (contacts, calendar, etc)

Restore to 4.2.1 fresh (no tiny umbrella required) anda activate normally.
Then use redsnow 0.9.6rc12 on it (point to regular 4.2.1 firmware.
    Choose only to install cydia
Follow instructions for getting into DFU
If you are on windows vista/7 then run redsnow in windows xp sp2 compatibility mode
If you are on windows xp then you may need to set your affinity (I'll explain how if you are on windows xp)

Let me know exactly where it stops the process if it doesnt work again doing it from scratch.

Ok. Well you may need to do this then:
    Run redsnow
    Open task manager
Right click on redsnow.exe under processes
    Choose set affinity
Uncheck all cpu's except for one
    Then try running redsnow.

Always make sure your iTunes is updated also. Newer firmwares require updated drivers for recovery and DFU mode which they get from iTunes.
