Upgrading Jailbroken IPhone without losing data
Hi.
Im running 4.1 on my Jailbroken 3GS and want to upgrade to 4.2
Does anyone knw a way where i'll be able to upgrade without losing any data?
Help will be greatly appreciated!
Or would it be better to upgrade to 4.3.1?Last edited by Rids103; 04-10-2011 at 05:46 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

^Mostly yes. iTunes will restore Apple stuff and settings. PKGBackup helps to restore Cydia apps. There may be a few settings/preferences/screen locations that don't quite restore --- but it's not so bad.
However ....................
The absolute best success is achieved when the phone is set up as new. This assures any 'old' issues/problems are not transferred to the new load/jailbreak. On the downside, it also requires more work to get back to normal.
4.2.1 or 4.3.1?????
How dependent are you are on Cydia apps? Can you handle a little growing pain? 4.3.1 is still new. Some/many/? Cydia apps have not been updated or tested for 4.3.1 compatibility.

I actually just did this not even an hour ago. My method was via redsn0w > DFU mode > itunes restore w/ custom firmware.
After that I used a non JB back up (from a lower fw version) and it worked!
...i dont want to recommend it since im not sure, but you can probably just back up your current iphone on itunes to save all your data, then JB upgrade, then once everything is set up, restore using the backup you made.
...from what Ive read this MAY create some issues, but on the flipside many have restores from JB backups with zero issues.

^Me too
Most of the time a restore from a minor upgrade (ie: 4.1->4.2) is ok. The real issue (when they occur) is between major upgrades (ie: 3.x -> 4.x).
And Dude .... in case you did catch it .... I was NOT referring to the jailbreak stability, I was referring to the availability of compatible, tested and confirmed working 4.3.1 Cydia apps! Jailbreaking is about the apps, apps, apps, apps, apps, apps
