Can someone teach me how to jailbreak WITHOUT losing all my previous data?
Hello all, I will try to keep this short.

I have two iphone 3gs. One is currently on 3.1.3 JB via Spirit, and the other was also 3.1.3 but is now 4.1 via redsn0w + itunes.
I followed this guide on youtube: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8QuSkeL-yU&feature=channel_video_title]YouTube - How to Upgrade your iPhone 3g & 3gS from 3.xx firmware to Custom 4.1 Firmware[/ame]
...to upgrade my already JB 3.1.3 to 4.1. WELL...after successfully upgrading and unlocking, i also LOST ALL MY DATA. Pics, contacts, SMS, notes, etc...
I know i know, it was stupid on my part to not back up prior, and quite frankly im over it already.
What I want to know is how do I upgrade my other 3.1.3 iphone 3g that i just JB'd using Spirit to 4.1 WITHOUT losing my data this time around?
Thanks for your time!
Btw my basebands for both iphones are still 05.12.01 if it matters any.Last edited by j00zl33t; 04-10-2011 at 10:38 AM.

restore using itunes from backup

I already saved my SHSH on the 3.1.3 in Cydia via "make my life easier".
The only reason why I want to upgrade from 3.1.3 to 4.1 this time is because im having battery drain issues. Playing 20 mins in Pandora drained my battery about 35%.
I found out this is because of Spirit's hacktivation, which I didnt really need because I have an official SIM.
What steps do I need to take in order to upgrade to 4.1, keep all my data, and not have the battery drain issue?

you should just go to 4.2.1 if your anna go to 4.1.. ofc use sn0wbreeze if youe on a pc.
and never ever never ever restore your data from a backup in itunes if the backup was a backup of a jb device(only do it if you need the data and plan to re restore as new). it can cause issues etc etc...
use sb to make he custom fw,
you know this...
install pkgback up in cydia and tell it to backup your sms, photos and cydia stuff etc etc....
get ibye and tell it to ba kup your appstore data (most likly localy) (your data sill be in var/mobile/library/prefrences/ibm-backup). copy that folder, restore, reinstall ibye, run ibye then reput that folder u copied earlier then then resrore yourappstore data.
questions?

Yes, im just a little bit confused.
So that video i posted in my first post is the wrong way to do things? Whats the difference between redsn0w and sn0wbreeze anyway? The method i followed provided an already custom 4.1 fw so i didnt need to use sn0wbreeze.
By what you said, it seems like updating from 3.1.3 to 4.1 will wipe your data no matter what, and the only thing you can do is back up your data using different ways before updating. THEN put the data back in after the JB.
Kind of weird because if I remember correctly I was able to update from 3.x.x to 3.1.3 last year without backing up and i didn't lose any data.

custom firmwares simply put dont upgrade your bb, which is useful if you ever need to unlock/sell your device. redsn0w makes you update to stock fw, thus loosing your bb. pwnagetool(mac) and sn0wbreeze(win) both make custoks to protect your bb, and offer some specisl options when jbing.
unless you click 'update'in itunes to go to he newer fw, your data will be lost (you probably dis this fo the 3.x fws). rest assured that restoring (not updaing) will always cause data loss (unless you rretorr our itunes back, which is a horrid idea).
putting the data back on using ibye as well as pkgback works pretty good. setup time is cut in half becuase of them, and i do highly recomend buying them.
also to note that ibye takes foever to backup your data, so plug it in and then autolock on never.
i advise making your own custom fw vs. usin redsn0w. never know if you may sell your device =p

Ok kind of makes sense now. Basically snowbreeze will keep bb which is a good thing. But it only edits the current fw on your device. So how will I be able to make a custom 4.1 with sn0wbreeze without my iphone being on 4.1?
Also, what do you think of spirit? I used it to turn 3.1.3 official fw to 3.1.3 JB and its unlocked now too, but battery drains faster.
edit: I was thinking, why cant i just back up contacts, notes, pictures, and other stuff (except apps coz i can redownload them), via OpenSSH? Cant i just do that then once I did a restore i'll just download OpenSSH again and put the files back in!Last edited by j00zl33t; 04-10-2011 at 02:21 PM.

snowbreeze edits the ipsw you give it, as long as snowbreeze version is the one for that ipsw version.

you can, but pkgback backup is simpler.
for sb you dl the downlaid the firmware on your comp, it eduts and mods it and you restore to that fw it made, thus how it works.if you wantto go to ios 4.1, you may as well go to the latest for your. device, ios 4.2.1....... tht way you get all the new stuff etc.
when i was on a 3gs ios 3.1.3, i used spirit, worked fine for me. if you dont wish to stay on ios 3.1.3 tho, go to the latest, ios 4.2.1 via SB

Okay this is what im going to do to my already JAILBROKEN 3.1.3 iphone 3g:
1.Back up via itunes
2.Follow the video above, which restores the iphone to custom fw 4.1
3.Put newly JB 4.1 into DFU mode
3.Use itunes to restore from backup made in step 1.
4.Hope I am at 4.1 with all contacts, pics, vids, etc....
I hope it will work......Last edited by j00zl33t; 04-10-2011 at 03:54 PM.

my spelling is currently horrid bc im typing this all out on my iphone while doing homework, sorry if its a bit rough...
0. your data needs to be backed up. it is HIGHLY adviceable that you do not restore itunes backups if your are jailbroken. it restores parts of jb files and can cause the worst battery drain EVER. we are serious, it really really is not recomended, but if ABSOULETLY DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR IPHONE OR BATTERY LIFE, then go ahead. otherwise use ibye for backing up your appstore saved game data an progress etc. then use pkgbackup to backup sms, bookmarks, contacts, cydia packages and settings etc....
1. download sn0wbreeze for ios 4.2.1 (google it).
2. dl ios 4.2.1 for iphone 3g (google it.. i hear a site called flexieburns or something like that is good)
3. open sb, select the fw you dled, go to expert mode. if you are on offical carrier, deselect the active opyion (and choose the stuff you want etc etc). then wait for sb to builf your fw.
3. sb will put the built jb fw on your desktop. follow the onscreen directions in sb ro put your device into pwned dfu mode, open itunes and shift+clc restore and find that custom fw.Last edited by bondkt; 04-10-2011 at 04:52 PM.

I used iTunes backup then snowbreeze and ultrasnow. I also for peace of mind i used diskaid to go into the phone and copy everything ie: photos contacts etc. To pc. Diskaid basicky gives you a similar view of phones hd as windows explored does on pc. After I finished updated jb I ran iTunes restored data , kept jb just fine
Btw maybe I'm lucky but my battery lasts about 20 hrs playing games like wwf and fvLast edited by jardinger; 04-10-2011 at 05:04 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

OK SUCCESS! I did it in my own way and it worked! Heres what I did.
0.I actually found a backup of my iphone 3g when it was 3.1.3 before I jailbroke it. So its a non JB backup meaning its good.
1.I followed the video above, and updated my JB 1.3.1 to JB 4.1 via redsn0w (fresh restore)
2.After I booted the jailbroken 4.1, I made sure ultrasn0w worked.
3.After confirming Ultrasn0w worked, I went to itunes and restored USING the 1.3.1 non jb backup.
4.Now I have 4.1 Jailbroken with all my contacts, SMS, pics, vids, etc...
itunes wasnt so bad after all!
