A friend handed me this phone, new in the box. I expected a much newer firmware.

TO get right to the point, I need to Unlock and Jailbreak this..

DO I download a 4.2.1 and redsnow, then just simply do the ultrasnow unlock via cydia?

No update to 3.1.3 and use redsnow to jailbreak it on 3.1.3
The 3G does not run well on 4.xx fw

Whats the best way to update to 3.13? Use Itunes? and load it that way?

When opening the 3.1.3 with Redsn0w it says not recognizable, I am now redownloading it. Sn0wbreeze also said invalid.

Loading 3.1.3 with Itunes right now.

Yes, I am using iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore 233,535 kb

Trying to open with 0.9.4

Itunes loaded it on correctly, with the shift+restore

Also, have windows compatibility set to win xp rc3, then have run as administrator checked.

you just need to download a different 3.1.3 for the iphone

that happens to me all the time and all i have to do is download a different ipsw from a different site and then it works

try that

I have two diff ipsws downloaded, have tried both.. im pretty sure they came from diff sources.

You can but i think you will need a att sim card to activiate it

try using a download from here and download it with something besides internet explorer
