Upgrade to 4.3.1 worth it?
Hey guys, I am wondering if 4.3.1 is worth upgrading to on my iPhone 4 on 4.1.
My setup is a 32gb iPhone 4 on 4.1, jailbroken with limera1n and still on the original baseband (01.59.00) with very possible shsh file saved possible.
I definitely will jailbreak it with the dev team/i0nic's tools on 4.3.1
Does 4.3.1 have any pros/cons vs 4.1? Or is it basically not different at all?
I have also heard rumors of cell signal problems when using the original baseband on 4.3.1. I am not planning on unlocking, but I want to keep it as an option because I may have a trip to go on soon.
Please give me some advice.

Don't upgrade. Ultrasn0w doesn't work for 4.3.2 yet

If you don't NEED the unlock then the upgrade to 4.3.1 should be fine. But you need to use pwnagetool which is Mac only to preserve the baseband. Using redsn0w is only for people who are already on stock 4.3.1. If you didn't want to maintain the bb then redsn0w is the simplest route but since you want to keep the baseband at 1.59.00, you'll want to use a custom firmware made with the new pwnagetool.

I was going to restore using tiny umbrella which will preserve baseband and then JB with redsn0w. I am aware that ultrasn0w doesn't work yet on 4.3.1, but judging from musclenerds's tweets, it looks like an easy fix. I am not so concerned with unlock right now, but in 2-3 months I will want it.
Also wondering if there is a way to upgrade my baseband to an unlock-able version that might avoid a possible conflict with 4.3.1Last edited by thecrunked; 04-04-2011 at 02:54 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Did tinyumbrella update and now supports 4.3.1 baseband preservation? Last time it took a little bit of time before they got it updated for 4.2.1 to preserve the baseband.
Also, the only baseband that can be unlocked is 1.59.00 so you shouldn't be moving it from there. The devs are already working on fixing ultrasn0w to work with 4.3.1.Last edited by i.Annie; 04-04-2011 at 03:00 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Then by all means do so

The only thing I am worried about is what I have heard about signal problems with my baseband and 4.3.1. Apparently some people have been saying their signal bars never change from 1 bar (with or without JB)

I would hold off on upgrading. There seem to be a lot of problems with wifi and certain routers. Thisvis nothing to do with the jailbreak but standard 4.3.1. It is all over the apple forum.
As far as the jailbreak is concerned the main problem is if you update to 4.3.1 and you have an older baseband. Does not matter if you unlock or not you get one bar and does not display carrier. Some say only display issue but phone works, others seem to have service issues.

Right, the devs said it is purely a cosmetic issue. It displays 1 bar but you actually have signal. You won't lose signal, it's just all you get to see is one bar.
Apparently the fix for that is on the way with ultrasn0w's fix for compatibility with 4.3.1

Yah. I've been on 4.1 since limera1n came out. A few more days is no big deal to me, I'm def going to wait for the kinks to be worked out before upgrading.

I was on exactly the same setup as the OP: iP4, iOS 4.1. BB 1.59.00. I'm on AT&T.
Just tried JBing the phone with Pwnage Tool. First time, I had a crash-on-open problem with Cydia (but had service).
Baked another IPSW and tried again, but now I have no service (1 bar, no AT&T carrier logo, data doesn't work).
I'll give it one more shot, but for people who are content with 4.2 or 4.1, I would suggest sticking with it until these issues are ironed out.
NB for the poster above, keeping "the wrong baseband" is a big reason why people jailbreak in the first place and use Pwnage Tool over Redsn0w. For those of us who want to preserve the BB for unlocking in the future (and get better resale value), restoring defeats the purpose of JBing.Last edited by dehory; 04-06-2011 at 12:49 AM.

you might want to try upgrading to 4.3.1 with stock firmware, you can still preserve your baseband using tinyumbrellla. i have heard a lot of issues like yours from people using CFW. the best bet is to upgrade with tinyumbrella, than JB with redsn0w. there will be only 1 signal bar for right now, but musclenerd said it will be fixed shortley

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that rather than go through the somewhat lengthy Pwnage Tool process another time.
I think the last non-Pwnage Tool jailbreak I did was with ZiPhone!
EDIT: See my post here. The 4.3.1 jailbreaks seem too unstable to me right now. I downgraded to 4.2.1 (well, really an upgrade since I was on 4.1).Last edited by dehory; 04-07-2011 at 10:47 AM.
