I used the search feature but couldn't find anything concrete so just had to come on here and ask real quick.
My buddy has an iphone 4 and has never jailbroken it but now wants to get into it to get some of the apps I have. A few months ago I used tinyumbrella to save his SHSHs from 4.1 to 4.2b.
Right now he is on 4.0.1 and he doesn't want to update to 4.3 because of the battery issues and jailbreak problems. He wants to know if he can update to firmwares that are NOT the current release and go back if he wants to? He knows once he gets off 4.0.1 he won't be able to go back to that again but if he goes to say 4.2 and jailbreaks that then could he go back and forth between 4.1 and 4.2 without having to update to the current 4.3/4.3.1 firmwares?
Also, since we both have the same AppStore apps but I have lots of free jailbroken apps that he wants, since I have **** 4.0 installed could I sync my jailbroken apps to his itunes and then he could sync those apps to his phone without jailbreaking it?
Lastly, since I have a few jailbroken iPhones can I sync all my jailbroken apps to them if they are all jailbroken and have ***** on them despite the fact that I may have downloaded all the apps to only 1 of the phones?

there is no talk about pirating apps..... **** is for pirating apps which is not allowed to be talked about in these forums
but on the other stuff.... if he has the 4.1 and 4.2 SHSH with tiny, then all you have to do is download the firmware for one of those and tehn start the TSS server on tiny and then upgrade his phone in itunes.....

i use *** to sync my cydia apps that are not pirated. while i appreciate your response i don't think you can make such a blanket statement about ****.
i.e. i paid the $12 for iblacklist and when i got rid of my previous iphone, i wiped it but used **** to sync iblacklist so that i could put it on my new phone. that way i still maintain the 1 license usage of iblacklist that i paid for. just an example.
note: i don't have any cracked apps but i installed **** thinking it would allow me to sync my jailbroken apps so that i don't have to reinstall them every time i updated or restored.

bah! you'd think someone would have found a way by now. is there then a way to not lose then if you update or restore? i know they'd get wiped out but if you did a backup then would that restore your jailbroken apps too?
You can't sync jailbroken apps like dragon said. Redownload them or back them up with pkgbackup or aptbackup. You can restore them back on after a restore so long as you restore from backup in iTunes.
now if i restore them from an itunes backup will all the settings in each app be kept? example: my blacklist in iblacklist has probably 20 phone numbers or so in it. do i have to redo all of that?
also, i have pkgbackup so do still need to back them up in itunes or are those 2 kinda required and complement each other to successfully backup and restore them?
edit: my mistake on using **** in my post as i wasn't aware it was only used for cracked apps and there were other methods needed to sync the jailbroken ones. **** has been deleted from my phone now that i know i don't need it.
I've heard pkgbackup doesn't need you to restore from backup but I've had trouble with that so I'm assuming you should backup in iTunes, then restore from backup to be sure.
You'll need iTunes backup to restore the apps and the settings. I'm not 100% if this applies for jb apps but if you restore from backup, your regular app data would be saved and restored. I wanna say it's true for jb apps too.
HOWEVER, if you ever need to restore your device solely due to your device experiencing problems, it's highly recommended to just bite the bullet and lose your data and not restore from backup. Save contacts apps music photos manually into iTunes and your computer, then set up as new. Restoring from backup on a problematic device will defeat the purpose of restoring as it will just likely carry the problem over.
ok here's a twist. since i have 3 iphones that i use often(I almost never use the 2G), how do you differentiate from the different backups in itunes since they all say "Alex's iPhone". like how would i be able to tell which one was the most recent one from the ip4 vs the 3gs for example.
also for some reason the backups don't always list the time/date that the backup was made so is there a solution for that?
yeah sorry ive never had a problem with the time/date on my backups. That's how I determine when i have more than one backup per device which is the latest one that I want to use. They are usually organized in order. I can't remember if it is newest on top or newest on bottom of the list, but perhaps if you can get that noted then you can determine which backups are new or old for you to choose from.
Dragon is correct, forum rules forbid any kind of piracy or stealing, no 12345sync is allowed or it will be deleted . Please respect this website, we do not teach people to steal , we want you to support both apple apps and third party apps as well. Without your support , there won't be any new apps for us to enjoy. I hope that I made this clear enough.
it's weird cause some of the backups have time/date but others don't. i guess since i don't need older backups i could go and delete all the backups and start with new ones with my phone names changed so i can differentiate.
Yeah I'm sure you could do that. I never use old backups, I always use the one that was just made before I restored. So I'm sure that applies to you too.
