on 3G no need shsh to downgrade to 3.1.2 on 3GS & i4 you will need your shsh to downgrade or upgrade to early ios. don't need shsh to jailbreak at your present ios which ever it may be, however its best that you have the shsh for that ios you are jailbreaking in the even you need to restore for what ever reason. if you do not have that shsh, you have no choice but to update to the latest ios which may cause you to loose your unlock... you can not restore to any ios that apple is no longer signing unless you have the shsh saved!!

Hey gents, that post is from May of last year so it's a tad out of date. At this point you should always grab SHSH files for each new version of firmware you install. It's just good practice in case you need to downgrade at some point in the future. SHSH's themselves don't have anything to do with Jailbreaking besides allowing you to return to an earlier version of the firmware if you need to. Hope that helps and thanks for visiting the site. Please do check out our newer articles for more current info! Cheers.
