I have an iPhone 3G with 4.2.1_8C148 BB:05.15.04-6.4_M3S2. I am not able to put my iPhone into DFU mode even after trying for more than 15 days and numerous attempts.
I tried many tutorials but I stuck at the step where I have to enter into DFU mode.
Please guide as I have spent so many sleepless nights with my iPhone. And one more thing I want to mention here that it never gets to home screen, instead it always turns on and ends up showing me CD iTunes and a Data cable with slider lock and after slide unlocking it takes me to emergency dialer.

No I am trying to update 4.2.1 only
When I purchased this phone (3 week back) it was 3.1.3 after connecting to my laptop iTunes asked to update its firmware. I updated it as I thought that this way I would be able to get rid of this locked screen. But all in-vain. After all the update process I am still stuck on the same screen.
Yeah, you are at emergency screen, why do you want to go into dfu mode. Just activate it with a valid sim.
If you want dfu mode : with iphone plug in. Hold both buttons for 10 secs, release the Power button and continue to hold the Home button for another 10 secs, screen is black.
@iYeow this is what I have tried so many times that my finger started to go numb (by pressing power button so hard) but failed to get into DFU mode.
@Bootloader I am in India so I can't get an AT&T sim here. Can any one here could be of any help. Do I need to get a active AT&T sim.
I would pay if anyone agrees to send it to me.

Your current baseband cannot be unlocked unless you update to ipad bb. If you don't know if you have any shsh blob and you don't have a valid sim, i suggest put your iphone into recovery mode and restore to 3.1.3.
Try running redsn0w 0.9.6RC8 and browse to stock 4.2.1 , choose install cydia , it will hactivate and jailbreak your IOS 4.2.1 if your current firmware is 4.2.1
If your current baseband is 05.15.04, and you need unlock, you can also check ipad baseband update when running redsn0w.

*I don't know pros and cons of updating to IPad BB. I have no hesitation going for it you suggest...
*I have asked someone to send me a AT&T sim but that will not be an active sim and for sure I would not be having AT&T network here.
*I will try restoring to 3.1.3 and will update the findings.
*If I don't get success in restoring to 3.1.3 I will try the redsn0w step.
And yes my baseband is 05.15.04 but then again iPad Baseband is a Question mark for me.

When I tried to restore to 3.1.3 iTunes gave me an error - "iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible."
Tried RedSn0w (Install iPad BB and Cydia) but it also requires phone to enter DFU mode, which I am not able to do.
Purchased an AT&T sim card off eBay waiting for it to arrive.
Any other suggestion or advice is appreciated...

You need to run greenpois0n rc5 at this stage, and it will take your phone out of recovery mode and jailbreak at the same time. This worked for me, good luck
Mountainmasher, Thanks for guidance but that is the main problem that I am not able to enter DFU mode So GreenPois0n will not work for me.
BOth the buttons work fine. I have done this on other iPHones in very first attempt so am have practice of timing but on this phone I am not able to do it.
The AT&T aim card don't need to to be active so you could ask a friend to send you an old sim will do. As for update to ipad's bb to unlock.... One word of caution there is no turning back once u updated and you will lose your gps and problem with wifi as well so think about it first. Try redsnow again only this time do not click on next when you have to follow the screen to place device in to DFU get a head start power down the device> proceed to push the power button for 4 seconds then push the home key down, you will see the apple icon release the power button while keep pushing the home key down foe another 14 seconds you will hear an sound from your computer release the home key, now click next and redsnow will proceed to next step....... Now let's back up a little bit, when you open redsnow> browsed point to the iOS 4.2.1 make sure it's the 4.2.1 for 3G if you are not sure redownload the file. Check, install Cydia, activate and maybe the batteries, nothing else it will slow down your phone, click next this will bring you to the screen where you need to place your device in DFU, now just follow my instruction above and this get you in DFU and jail break the phone also will do away with att sim card for activate, you may have problem with drain batt case by push notification, so you may end up install SAM. But first thing first, let's get your device back in order
After it's jb you need to hard boot the device and may need to go to setting and hit reset before it will work with the sim card of choice!! Good luck

I am eagerly waiting for the AT&T sim to arrive as I am in India and I bought an AT&T sim card off eBay so it will take another 5-7 days for it to reach me. I will proceed with your instructions and will update back.

If you can wait that long then sit tight and leave things be because you really don't want to install SAM unless you have no choice. In your case you do !!
