Default Do I restore as new phone or from backup after jailbreak?

I just updated my phone and jailbroke it. When I open Itunes it ask if I want to restore as a new phone or from backup which option as I suppose to choose? I remember reading somewhere say something if you restore from backup you lose 500mb of space after every upgrade? Not sure if this is true so confused! Please help.

New device. Restoring from a backup when jailbroken can cause problems. If you want a clean jailbreak without any errors create as a new iphone.

^Good advice, restoring from backup on a jailbroken iPhone is known to cause battery draining issues as well as instability issues.

So, if I already jailbreak & unlock the phone to 4.2.1 just now and I "restore as a new phone." Will I have to jailbreak & unlock and restore to 4.2.1 all over again??? So confused as to what option I'm suppose to select in iTunes. Thanks for the help so far.

After restoring either a custom firmware or stock firmware, the first time you connect your iPhone 3G to your PC, iTunes will ask you whether you want to set up your iPhone 3G as a new phone or from a backup. If your iPhone 3G is jailbroken and unlocked and you are not having battery draining issues or any other problems, then no you do not need to start over.

What jailbreaking tool did you use to jailbreak your iPhone 3G (PwnageTool, SnowBreeze, Redsn0w, Greenpois0n)? Since you mentioned unlock, I am assuming you used either PwnageTool or SnowBreeze.

I just restored from a backup and my battery is exactly the same. I did this to keep my game saves since AppBackup isn't working. My Other partition is 0.77gb which seems kinda large but I can't remember what it was before.

Generally it is advised to set up as new to *avoid* possible previous jb residue that could *potentially* cause issues (and those issues vary for everyone).

It doesn't mean if you restore from back up that you *will* get problems. Most of the time, restoring from backup is harmless, however, if your primary reason to restore was because you were experiencing problems, you should not restore from back up. If the problem was say...Cydia was crashing. You'll probably still get Cydia crashing after a restore if you restore from back up. But if you upgraded solely for the reason of upgrading and there was nothing wrong with your device, it should be fine
