Check to see if you have SHSHs saved for 4.1 or 4.2.1 (4.0.x is not good for an iPhone 3G) with TinyUmbrella.

    Download it at thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com

Then you can try a custom firmware with sn0wbreeze. Sn0wbreeze doesn't play well with the iPhone 3G but it can work most of the time. You'll want version 2.0.1 if you're going to 4.1. Don't use 2.0.2 for iPhone 3G. If you're going to 4.2.1, use the version on ih8sn0w.com. It can be buggy with iPhone 3G on that version so expect that.

    4.1 and sn0wbreeze 2.0.1

Remember, you'll need SHSHs for 4.1 to do this

Good info to know, but I'm a bit confused as to how he would have SHSH for 4.1 or 4.2.1 anyway, since he is still on 3.1.2 firmware. Shouldn't he be able to upgrade to the firmware w/o having to worry about it since he is upgrading to the higher firmware?

You need SHSHs regardless of if youre upgrading or downgrading. Apple isn't signing the firmwares anymore, you can't get to them without SHSHs regardless of whether you're going up or down.

Actually all the reviews I have read say that any of the ios 4 versions are a major performance joke for those of us with the 3g. I do not want to be forced to upgrade to a substandard os just because Apple is strong arming me. The problem is with NONE of the new apps working on the IOS 3 versions. This makes me very angry. Is ther a work around? The fw changer allowes one to download but not opperate new apps.

So since they are not signing for any firmware except for 4.3, and if the iPhone is at 3.1.3, you can only upgrade to 4.3, but not to 4.2.1 or 4.1 because you can no longer attain those SHSH files?

Right. If that device at 3.1.3 up until today has never saved SHSHs, no SHSHs are available for that device therefore can only restore to currently signed firmware which is 4.3.

If, however, the device has saved the SHSHs about two weeks ago when 4.2.1 was still being signed, you would be able to have 4.2.1 SHSHs to restore to. If the SHSHs were saved for this device when 4.1 was being signed, 4.2.1 will automatically be saved in most cases thereafter bc the device has initially authorized the SHSHs to be saved already.

SHSHs are unique to each device and cannot be "shared"

Sorry to tell you this..... If you are on 3G, you can not upgrade to 4.3. 4.2.1 is the last iOS that support 3G. The best think to do at this point is to check what shsh was saved. Was this phone ever jailbroken before? If so on the first page of Cydia will tell you what shsh's are save. If this phone was never jb then chances are you don't have any shsh save, and you are stuck at 3.1.2 or 3.1.3
