need help jailbreaking with redsn0w
Here's my situation - I'm attempting to jailbreak my iphone so I can unlock it and use it on TMobile, however I'm having quite a bit of trouble jail breaking it. First I tried on my PC with redsn0w and it would constantly get frozen in the "Uploading ramdisk" portion. After 3-4 times of failing on my PC, I went to my laptop which has windows 7. Finally, I could get past the point where it says "Uploading ramdisk" and redsn0w would say it was complete and it worked. However, my iPhone would not restart automatically and instead, it would be stuck in this mode where the screen is on, but it's displaying a really dark blue almost blackish light. I had to restart the phone just so I could boot it up, andd low and behold cydia wasn't installed and it wasn't jailbroken. I tried this a good 2-3 times but each time the phone wouldn't restart after redsn0w said done. I've watched videos and it appears that the phone is supposed to restart and some lines of code or something will flash on the screen for a few seconds, then it will boot - my phone doesn't do this.
I'm running 4.2.1 and baseband 5.15.04. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention My iPhone is an iPhone 3G 8 GB model.Last edited by firecat318; 03-20-2011 at 02:50 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

You're trying to unlock? Are you planning on updating the baseband with redsn0w then to the iPad baseband of 6.15.00?
Mind you doing that will break the GPS.
You should check to see if you have the 5.8 bootloader to see if you can downgrade the baseband to an unlockable state.
You might want to restore to 3.1.3 and find out your bootloader first before you attempt to jb on 4.x again.
Is it absolutely necessary for you to be on 4.2.1? Because 3.1.3 is probably the best firmware for an iPhone 3G.

Edit: scratch the downgrade to 3.1.3. You'll need to be on 4.1 or 4.2.1 to install the iPad baseband in case your bootloader isn't the right one to downgrade the baseband. Do you have SHSHs saved?
You can find out with TinyUmbrella from thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com.
You'll need to have SHSHs to restore so that you can attempt a clean jb again.
Run f0recast from ih8sn0w.com to see what bootloader you haveLast edited by i.Annie; 03-20-2011 at 03:44 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

To get redsn0w to get past that "Uploading RamDisk" state with using Windows 7, make sure you have it set to compatibility mode "Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and run as Administrator. It will fix your issue.

Ultimately I'm trying to unlock my phone but I realize I need to jailbreak it first. I would go back down to a lower firmware such as 3.1.3 but I honestly don't know how. I've tried downloading firmwares from the internet and downgrading in itunes, but it fails because they aren't signed by apple.

3.1.3 shouldn't fail if it's an iPhone 3G. Only iOS 4 requires an iPhone 3G to have SHSHs to restore with.
So if it is a 3G 3.1.3 and below shouldn't be a problem.
You need to figure out your bootloader before anything else happens. I can blindly walk you through, or you can find that piece of information out first so I can properly help you
Go to ih8sn0w.com and download f0recast and see which bootloader you have.

if you are going to go down to 3.1.3 after you figure out such information and you need too, you have to put your iphone into DFU mode, which is reccommended.... and im sure someone will give you instructions or you can look for a video
