Help! lost and confused. Iphone 3GS update and unlock

I think i messed up I have a iphone 3GS.

I think i had FW 3.1.3 unlocked and jailbroke. But I wanted to update to 4.2.1 so that I could use the new changes and apps. But now i've bricked my phone and have had repeated error messages I have no idea how to get it to work.

Can someone please give me a step by step of how to update/jailbreak and unlock my phone?

Please note. That Apple is no longer signing 4.2.1.

Do you have 4.2.1 SHSH? If unsure you can check with tiny umbrella.

What is that and how do i check? Sorry I'm pretty jailbreak illiterate. I have Tinyumbrella installed.

What is the current status of your device?

I have the newest tinyumbrella installed.

My phone currently is DFU blank screen.

You will need to find out your ecid then: iClarified - iPhone - How to Find Your iPhone ECID [Windows]

Once you have it add it manually to tiny umbrella, then press save SHSH to see what you get.

I get a message saying the device is not connected.

Dont worry about that, it wont detect your device if it is in DFU, just enter the ecid manually and press save SHSH.

I did that, I created the Snowbreeze firmware. How do I use tinyumbrella to get it to work?

I keep getting a 1600 error.

Try using redsnow 0.9.6rc8 to enter pwned DFU first then shift restore to the custom firmware you made: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Using a Custom Restore IPSW and RedSn0w (Windows)

i get a message that says "unable to recognize specific IPSW" do i need to re-download the OSX?

Follow the guide. You need to point redsnow to a regular firmware, not the custom one. You dont use the custom one until you open iTunes.
