Default Upgraded to 4.1, now no service

My son upgraded his 3gs to 4.1. Now the phone will not show any service.
It knows the sim is in there but doesn't show any signal. With at&t sim it doesn't show anything for carrier info. With a t-mo sim it shows t-mo as the carrier.

Sim cards verified as good in another phone.

Every thing else works as normal

It wasn't but he is using at&t so he didn't worry about maintaining the unlock.

So the phone is locked to AT&T and he uses AT&T?
    And has his blobs saved?
Why not just restore to stock 4.1?

I am pretty sure that is what he did. He wasn't worried about maintaining the baseband so he didn't build cfw, he use stock. I put him off for a long time so we could research because I didn't want him to make a mistake. I figure if he would have maintained the ability to unlock at least the value of the phone may be more.

I think he was tired of waiting.

should he just try the restore to stock again and see what happens.

    Restore to stock.
If that doesn't work try a DFU restore to stock.

OK. I'll get him to try it again. I'll let you know what the result is.

    Thanks,

It sounds to me like he may have jailbroke before activating the phone, which would mean redsnow would have hactivated which would be the reason for no service. Restore to 4.1 or 4.2.1 and make sure to activate it with the ATT sim before trying to jailbreak again.

Also be sure to after restoring to set up as new. Sometimes the jailbreak from previous will carry over some residue which could create some problems.

Thanks so much. He restored to stock fw, activated and then jailbroke. He's smiling again.

That is what he did before, he skipped the activation part between restore and JB.
