"Other" is now 4 gig after backing up phone, HOW TO FIX?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and helping. Mods, my apologies if in wrong section.

I had 1 gig free disk space before I backed up my phone. I have 16 gig iphone 4. After backup the free space was gone and other had increased to 3.6 gig. I removed all music so I could have space while working on this issue and other went to 4.02 gig

Please advise, any help is appreciated.

How are you backing up? What and what with?
