I am a new Iphone user. I just got an Iphone 3GS with 3.1.2 Firmware and 5.11.07 baseband. I used Redsn0w to Jailbreak and unlock it. Most of the apps i want to download say they are only compatible with Ios 4+. My question is can I update or am I unable, I can follow directions very well but so far all I have found is a bunch of "Ibabble" about how to go about this. I would appreciate any help in this matter. I do need to have this phone unlocked as I am in Guam and in order to use it on any carriers here it needs to be unlocked.

You'll need SHSHs to update to a jailbreakable and unlockable firmware/baseband.

First, you must download TinyUmbrella to check. So go to thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com and download it.

Then open, with your phone plugged in, and click "Save SHSH" and see what the log tells you. Let me know.

Is that all? It only loaded for 4.3, it didn't say anything about the other firmwares whether it has them or not? Well firstly, kill of Skype and re-open TU and try again.

Whenever I save my SHSHs it not only tells me I have 4.3, 4.2.1, but it also tells me I do NOT have 4.1 etc. So I kind of needed to see what all you had or did not have.

Ok it looks like it has 4.1 saved. I'm not sure why it doesn't have 4.2.1 as well.

You can go to 4.1, is that something you wanna do? If so I can write you up a step-by-step for it.

Yes it's untethered. Last question before I write you up a guide. Do you have a Mac or PC?

I'm on a PC running windows 7.

Download these things first:
1) stock 4.1 ipsw (firmware) - you can find it here on MMi in the downloads section
2) sn0wbreeze 2.1.2 - you might have to Google this, I am not sure if the current version 2.2 works for 4.1.
3) make sure your iTunes is updated
4) redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 (Google for the dev team blog, first link) and find it in the second post (you might have to scroll a bit down)

Steps to follow:
1) let's make a custom firmware. Open Sn0wbreeze and select your 4.1 stock firmware. Be sure to go into Expert mode.
2) in the General submenu, be sure to select "activate" if you do not have an official SIM card to activate with. If you do, do not select "activate" here.
3) go ahead and build the custom firmware.
4) it may take some time
5) ok, when that's done, it should save automatically to your desktop.
6) let's open redsn0w. Select the same 4.1 ipsw you used earlier (not the custom one we just made)
7) when prompted, select DFU mode only and nothing else
8) follow the timer to set your phone into DFU
9) now when your phone is successfully in DFU, open TinyUmbrella.
10) Click "Start TSS Server"
11) then open iTunes (do not close TinyUmbrella)
12) now hold shift and click restore and select your custom firmware. Do NOT accidentally select the stock firmware or else you'll lose the unlock.
13) let iTunes restore.
14) now when it finishes, if you selected "activate" when you were building your custom fw, it will let you access the springboard
15) if you did not select activate, you may insert your official SIM card now and go to iTunes to activate the phone.
16) go to Cydia and let it reorganize.
17) when it is done, go back into Cydia and let it load. Wait and when it prompts you for upgrades, do the complete upgrade (it will give you a couple options).

When you're done with the upgrades your phone will reboot and after that, you can freely go to Cydia and search "ultrasn0w" and install that to unlock
