Little help upgrading 3GS from 3.1
Hey guys,
I was hoping I could get a little help in updating my current Jailbroken 3GS running OS 3.1 to one of the newer iOS. I don't need to do an Unlock, just a Jailbreak.
I saw the guide posted on using greenpois0n and figure that is the way to go, but was wondering if I was going to run into any problems updating the phone to 4.2.1? And since the current release is 4.3...what is the best way to update the firmware to 4.2.1? Can I still put the phone in recovery and SHIFT click Restore on iTunes to select the older firmware?
Sorry if the questions seem elementary. But I only jailbreak like once a year, and every time is different, hehe. Thanks for any info you can throw my way guys!

You can shift restore to 4.2.1 no problem but only if you have 4.2.1 SHSH.

Looks like I'm in luck and Tiny Umbrella says I saved the 4.2.1 SHSH. ;-)
So all I have to do to upgrade to 4.2.1 is Hit Start TSS Server in Tiny Umbrella and Shift Restore on iTunes?

TinyUmbrella is only showing 3.1.3 under saved SHSHs.
Can I not update to 4.2?
Im not a no0b lol. I was a member here when using Facebook Sign in. Never rejoined when they took that away.

Did you press the save SHSH button in tiny umbrella? If you have 3.1.3 SHSH you should have them all the way up to 4.3.

Ok after a successful jailbreak, I ran into a little snafu. iOS 4.2.1 does not play nicely with my Alpine iDA-X001 stereo system, which 4.1 and 4.3 do work. So my options are wait for a 4.3 jailbreak or downgrade to 4.1, which I do have the SHSH for. Not sure how long a jailbreak for 4.3 will take to release however.
Question is, if I decide to downgrade to 4.1, can I use the same greenpois0n software that I used to jailbreak 4.2.1 to do the jailbreak or is there something else I need to use?

You would have to use a older greenpoison on 4.1. Not sure of the exact version though. I always use redsnow 0.9.6rc8 for 4.1.

It works in a simliar way, but you would need to point redsnow to a 4.1 firmware for it to work. Then choose to install cydia and follow the instructions it gives you.

Alright, I'll give it a try. Kinda annoying not being able to use the phone with the car stereo, which I understand is not an issue with 4.1 or 4.3
Not a question to do with jailbreaking, but maybe you know the answer. I noticed a huge decrease in battery life with 4.2.1 over the previous 3.1 I had installed on the phone. Is that normal? Wasn't sure if the version of iOS had an affect on battery life, since I'm not doing anything else out of normal that I wasn't doing on iOS 3.1
