iPhone 3G 3.1.3 jailbroken & unlocked -- just want a "clean install", not sure how

Hi everyone,

I've been searching for a solution to my problem/doubt for some time now, but have not found any so far, so given the fact that to me modmyi seems like the most reliable forum, I have decided to ask here for help.


My iPhone 3G 3.1.3 has been jailbroken and running for (i think) 1,5 years now. It has "suffered" many many app installations/uninstallations, and has gone quite slow and little responsive in the past months.

Judging from numerous negative comments on the web, I have ruled out upgrading the firmware.

I just want a "clean install" (remaining with the 3.1.3 firmware), hoping for a more snappy and fast iPhone. I have considered but don't think just "Erase All Content and Settings" in the Reset Settings would do it.


My problem is I am not sure HOW TO BEST RESET/RESTORE/REINSTALL IT, without compromising the jailbreak & unlock!


I have downloaded the iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw and tried to jailbreak it both on Windows and Mac, with sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool 4.2, but was not able to (always got "wrong ispw" message).

HOW SHOULD I PROCEED?

Shift+restore (option on Mac) to the stock 3.1.3 firmware.

After restore, jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.4 (you need 3.1.2 ipsw as well for this part).

Need version 1.4 and stock 3.1.3 ipsw to shift+restore to

Probably need the right version of that too. I can't remember which version is for 3.1.3.

If you have official carrier's SIM, easiest way is to shift+restore to stock 3.1.3, activate with SIM, then go to Safari and go to jailbreakme.com

Edit: sorry I didn't organize that well. Thats 4 separate different methods for you to take.

I know this is a stupid question, but I have found too many sites/links where to download ispw from lately..

Where do I download the real stock firmware from?

Also, did I understand correctly, you recommend stock ispw and then jailbreakme.com?

Just to make sure, we are talking untethered jailbreaks and no baseband updates, right?

I'd recommend downloading firmwares from here on MMi in the Downloads section.

You're trying to go to 3.1.3, there won't be a change in your baseband.

iPhone 3G is never tethered.
