iPhone Will Not Restore WHY?
I have an iPhone 4, that was jailbroken at 4.2.1.
I wanted to upgrade and delete the jailbreak to go to 4.3
I plugged it in, and it wouldn't update, and gave me an error.
Then it put it in recovery mode, so I attempted to restore it entirely.
It will not even restore, returns the same error.
Is there a way to MAKE my iPhone restore to factory settings?

Open tiny umbrella, click on advanced. Deselect the box that says set hosts to cydia on exit. Click apply then close tiny umbrella. Then try the restore again.

Thanks, attempting now.
Ok, it worked great!
But now when I go to use tinyumbrella to downgrade to 4.2.1, I get a new error message. (Error 21)
I am attempting to do this by turning on TSS server.
Opening iTunes and going to my iPhone Summary
Click 'Check for Updates' while holding ALT
Selecting the correct 4.2.1 firmware.

Dont use tiny umbrella if you want to go back down to 4.2.1. No need for it yet. You are just trying to restore to a regular 4.2.1 and not a custom one right?

Correct. How do I just go back down to 4.2.1 then? Just simply close it and downgrade using iTunes only?

Ok, lol, well i got that done...
Apparently my iPhone has a passlock now? What is that???
Really now? Is that even possible? I never had a passcode before, and now it is saying I need to enter a passcode.
Any reason you may know of?Last edited by iliveudie; 03-09-2011 at 09:36 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Stumped me on that one sorry. You don't have a encrypt setting enabled in your iTunes do you?

Did you restore your backup after the restore or is it giving you that message first?

Downgraded to 4.2.1, then restored from back up.
UPDATE: On 4.3 right now. Restored my iPhone from backup. I have no passcode now. Should I try downgrading again? Or is there something I need to change first?Last edited by iliveudie; 03-09-2011 at 10:07 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Try restoring again (from DFU mode, no TinyUmbrella) to 4.2.1, and make sure you do NOT restore from backup.
It'll be cleaner, and will have a far greater chance of succeeding than if you restore from a backup following a firmware downgrade. Restoring from backups is a dicey proposition normally, and when doing so on a once-jailbroken unit it becomes a disaster waiting to happen.

Figured it out everyone. When I forced it to restore from a backup, the 'latest' backup was taken on 4.3, trying to be placed on a 4.2.1, which, for some reason, placed a passcode.
So, I just restored to 4.2.1, and used a backup from about 3 days ago rather than from earlier today.Last edited by iliveudie; 03-09-2011 at 10:50 PM.

That backup likely had a passcode, meaning you probably set a passcode during the time that backup was created.

Weird, it still shouldnt have had a password (unless you set one like Annie said). It would have giving you an error though if trying to restore from a 4.3 backup when you are on 4.2.1.

Annie, I know for a fact that it did not have a password because I could put my iPhone on 4.3, then click restore from a previous backup, and use the back up done on 4.3. It worked fine and had no passcode. BUT if I then held down ALT while clicking 'check for updates' in iTunes, and chose the 4.2.1 ISPW, it would successfully downgrade the phone, BUT since the phone was using a backup created on 4.3, it would not work on 4.2.1. So, for some unknown reason, it would lock it with a passcode.
Instead I had to restore back to 4.3, then downgrade to 4.2.1 before setting up the phone. Then once on 4.2.1, I attempted to use that same backup, but got the error message saying the backup was to new and I needed to upgrade. So, instead, I used a backup created on 4.2.1 rather than 4.3.
The 4.3 firmware did not have a passcode on it. Like I said, i could use it ok if my phone was running on 4.3, but the second I downgraded, it locked me out.Last edited by iliveudie; 03-10-2011 at 01:54 PM.

Ok right but I'm telling you, the time when you did get the password, the back up you used probably had a password on it. Like you could've synced iTunes at one point in your life and at that time the phone had a password, then you removed the password but the backup was already saved.
But if you can say you've never ever ever set a password on your phone before, then that's not normal. I'm just saying I've set a password before, didnt like it and removed it. Im sure a lot of us has done that before.
But since you're convinced you didn't have a password, then that's quite weird and suspicious.

I have set a password before, but took it off. I tried that password and it wasn't it.
And also, what I was saying was that I hit restore, and went to 4.3. I restored from the backup, and everything went great. Had all my contacts, music, apps, etc. And no passcode. The only problem was I wanted 4.2.1 so I could jailbreak again. So I clicked the check for update, and used 4.2.1 ispw and successfully downgraded to 4.2.1. No restore or anything, just downgraded firmware. Them when I turned it on, and slid to unlock, there was a password. When I went back up to 4.3, no password. Down again, password. Very strange.
