Default downgrade firmware = downgrade baseband?

    hi,
i'm not an expert and, after hours of searching info, I'm still confused.

Downgrading your firmware, implies that your baseband is downgraded too?

I have an iphone 3G, firmware 4.2.1 and baseband 5.15.04. It's jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.6rc8. I want to downgrade to 3.1.3 and I wonder if it results on a baseband downgrade which allows me to unlock with ultrasn0w 1.2. Is it possible?

In case that baseband doesn't change, how can i unlock my iphone? I've been told that if you upgrade to 6.15 baseband, you lose GPS function and you can't restore by itunes, is it true?

    Thanks for your answers.

^ That would be your only shot but it was only a small percentage of phones that had that.

If downgrading firmware will automatically downgrade baseband, we wouldn't be so busy answering questions ...

thank you very much for your explanations.
I checked my bootloader and is 6.04. So, I guess, my only chance is to upgrade my baseband to 6.15 (to unlock it)? Is true that I lose the GPS function and I can't restore original firmware? Is it "reversible"?
    Thanks.

There is ONE other exception to this rule, but it only applies to the iPhone 4.

It breaks GPS for sure but Google Maps and Garmin still work. You just can't use TomTom or Navigon (or any true GPS apps). So weigh your options carefully.

I feel like it would drop the value of the phone. But so many local iPhone buyers have no idea what basebands all mean, they'd still be suckers and buy it. I'd just feel so bad for them, I could never sell someone an iPhone with broken GPS bc what if they needed that function?

I have 3GS that had old BB I jailbroke with redsn0w and upgraded the BB to iPad BB now TomTom does not work, wifes iPhone 3GS has newer BB so had to jailbreak with greenp0ison to remove teather and can not change BB but resulted in a 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 on a 5.x.x BB and her TomTom works so it is defiantly a BB issue. Unless you need TomTom for iPad lol
