That is okay. I only need the phone to work for the next month, after that I am leaving for boot camp and will not be using it for two months. Planning on updating to an iPhone 4 (depending on how far out iPhone 5 is by then) after I get out. As long as I can still use my wifi and make calls out/send texts I'll be fine.
So could you point me in the right direction (guide-wise maybe) to updating my baseband to iPad, so that it will be unlockable again?
I see ultrasn0w in Cydia is used to adjust/upgrade the baseband, is this correct?

Ultrasnow is used to unlock but you need to use redsnow first to update to the ipad baseband. You will need to go bacl to 4.1 or 4.2.1 to do this (you can always go back after).
So here is what I did, if anyone else stumbles into the same issue, based on the information given and found.
Because the phone was still on the "Connect to iTunes" screen, I re-entered DFU mode and restored back to iOS 4.2.1 from 3.1.3, due to a lack of an update option in iTunes. Restore was successful.
I obtained redsn0w 0.9.6b6 (0.9.6b5 is outdated) via Google. I adjusted compatibility for Windows 7, running it in Windows XP SP2 mode by right clicking the *.exe file and selecting properties, compatibility tab. Opened as administrator via right click, loaded 4.2.1, which was identified. Selected only Cydia and Install iPad Baseband options. Entered DFU mode, patched and booted. I verified with f0recast that my 05.15.04 baseband was changed to iPad's 06.15.00 baseband. You'll notice (If you have it running) that f0recast v1.2 still indicates that this baseband is unlockable. This is incorrect and outdated.
-I tried out 4.2.1 for a while and was still not impressed with speeds, although slightly better than 4.0.
So, downgrade time, to 3.1.3.
I opened iTunes, put the device back into mode and restored to 3.1.3 with the new baseband. Of course, to bypass the error at the end I used Tiny Umbrella.
I then loaded up redsn0w 0.9.4 (note, different version) and pointed to my ISPW 3.1.2 (even though I'm using 3.1.3 on the device, it will work). Entered DFU mode and let redsn0w do its job. And holy crap, it's there. I feel like I just woke up from a iOS 4.0 nightmare. So much smoother! No keyboard lag? Hell. Yes.
Updating Cydia was rather lengthy however, but after it's updated it runs fine.
Within Cydia, search for Ultrasn0w, this will unlock your 3G to work once again with other GSM carriers. Install and restart springboard. You should now have your T-Mobile (or whatever) service working!
- I would recommend downloading an alternative to Cydia such as Icy, lightweight and less of a monster.
- iPhone Explorer also makes for a good file browser on the PC or MAC, it requires no additional installations on your device to use it, just iTunes.
And that's it! If you do run into this problem hopefully it will be easier to work through due to this.
Thanks! Checking it out right now, device is rebooting
So, I had some trouble getting Cydia updated fully. Ended up downloading iFile via Cydia and transferring the latest version of Cydia to my iPhone via iPhone Explorer. Located this file iFile on the device and installed with it. Everything is working smoothly now (no more update loops).
The newest I could find was Cydia 1.0.3222-73 (iPhone 3G).
Also if anyone misses advantages of multi-tasking on 4.0, you can achieve this with an app called Backgrounder. It will allow you to micromanage which applications will remain running as if they are in the foreground. I sometimes use VOIP, so this is very helpful if I'm receiving calls in on that line.
