Upgrading to 4.x from 3.1.3 without home button...

Hey guys, this is going to sound silly but my home button stopped working about 6 months ago and my phone has been fine since then its just now its started really messing up, the reception keeps dropping and it restarts by it self, tbh im fed up and i just want to completely re intall the firmware on it, now my question is this can i upgrade to 4.x (not sure which one is out and what i can use) from a 3.1.3 (7e18) firmware (i have a 3gs 16gb) without the use of the home buttun, im not sure if it still occurs but when i first jailbroke my phone it required you to enter dfu mode and to hold down the home button, if this still occurs i guess i cant jailbreak but if it doesnt could somone give me any advice/link me to a guide on how to do this please. Thanks very much.

Also is there any way I can backup my contacts/messages on my iphone and my iphone apps?

Edit: The top of cydia says SHSH: iOS 4.0, 4.01, 4.02, 4.1, 4.2.1
And i dont need to unlock the phone either i am using the carrier it was originally was bought on if that helps.

If you want to jailbreak then I suggest restoring to 4.0/4.0.1 with the help of tiny umbrella (see my sig for help with that). Once restored you can use jailbreakme.com to jailbreak without needing the home button.
