Newbie Help

I recently bought and Iphone4 in the US, and got sucked into an At&t 2 year plan. I love my phone, but my problem is I spend half my year living in china. I don't want to pay roaming charges(which are preposterous), nor have my contacts in china have to call to a California based number to get a hold of me, as that's ludicrous. I've looked over these forums, and from what I gather I can't get my iphone to work over here on a Chinese carrier due to my current firmware.

I'm working with an iphone 4 version 4.2.1 (think I bought it about a month ago with 4.0 something)and modem firmware 03.10.01

I don't know anything about smartphones, but I'm relatively savvy with computer technical stuff.

Is there anything I can do to get my phone to work on a Chinese carrier? Or am I up a creek.

Currently your iphone 4 cannot be unlocked for other carriers. There are rumors of an unlock being released in the next 2 weeks or so though.
