What happens when updates come out?

I have been trying to find out what happens to a jailbroken iphone when new iOS updates come out? Specifically, if iTunes says an update is available, and I click on update, what happens? Does my phone brick, does it just apply the update and I need to re-jailbreak and reload my cydia apps? I am hoping to find a process here. Do I have to update, then re-jailbreak it, or, once a proper firmware is released, can I just load that without re-installing all my cydia apps.

I hate to be such a noob, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you click update your phone beco es unjailbroken till a new jb is released. If you have to have an unlock DO NOT UPDATE till ultrasn0w is released and the dev team says its ok

Awesome thanks! I figured it would just un-jailbreak it and I would have to start over, but I just wanted to make sure. One final question, if I can? If I want the update, do I have to do the update thru iTunes and then re-jailbreak it, or can I go straight to the JB release to get the upgrade.

You can wait for a jailbreak release it's all the same firmware. The firmware just gets modded with a jailbreak.

Yeah I don't recommend updating till the dev team says so
