Start Tss Server, keep it running.
If you are using windows, run redsn0w 0.9.6RC8 , browse to stock 4.1 firmware, check only the box DFU mode, perform this action until dfu is done.
Now run itunes : shift + restore to custom fimware of 4.1

    1) Make sure you have the proper SHSH blobs saved for 4.1.

    2) Make sure you have the right firmware.

Restoring to custom firmware preserve your current baseband.
But if you want to use GP, then you have to restore to stock 4.1 whose baseband cannot be unmlocked. So becareful of what you want to do.

If you are restoring to stock 4.1 , you will get error 1004, use exit recovery again to kick it out.

Shsh blobs are needed for verification by Apple's Server when restoring firmware. So every iphone has its own firmware shsh blob.
For instance your iphone 4 and firmware 4.1 has a unique shsh blob which is different from 4.2.1 shsh blob on the same iphone.
Baseband is different, the version will determine whether this baseband can currently be unlocked by Ultrasn0w.
Every stock firmware carries a certain baseband. As the IOS firmware version goes higher, the baseband is also updated ( it increases and cannot be reversed by any tool at the moment )
Hope this will help you to understand better.

if you are tethering thru iPhone, then you can't restore. You need wifi from other source for verification.

If you are restoring an iPhone which is not on tether, then you can use laptop being tethered by an iPhone other than the one you are restoring.
