Quick question, very easy
I apologize if this is very easy to answer but here goes, just bought a used Iphone 3GS it has 4.0.2 firmware(8A400) and 05.13.04 baseband, it is currently unlocked and working but not synced to my itunes.
Can I restore it to a custom 4.2.1 firmware I created with Pwnagetool and not have anything screw up? Please be VERY SURE OF YOURSELF if you're going to answer, just because my phone is working, and I don't... want to lose that.. haha

Are you using a Mac ?
Yes, you can, in fact this is the beet way to preserve your baseband to be able to unlock with Ultrasn0w. Make sure you have atleeat itunes 10Last edited by iYeow; 02-28-2011 at 04:46 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Ok, I tried to restore to a custom 4.2.1 firmware and this, did not work. I got an error message and now my Iphone is displaying the apple logo and not turning on.
Can someone help me please? What should I do... Itunes is displaying the old "you must restore" icon..Last edited by hirschab; 02-28-2011 at 06:07 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Are you using the pwnage dfu mode b4 restoring in itunes.
If you are using windows to restore custom firmware created by Pwnage tools, you need to run redsn0w 0..9.6rc8 to put you into dfu mode before restore in itunes to custom firmware.Last edited by iYeow; 02-28-2011 at 06:46 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I think you haven't started restore yet, so do a hard reset , hold both button until it reboots. If this doesn't get you back to home screen.
Just do it from recovery mode.
If using windows, run redsn0w 0.9.6rc8, browse to stock 4.2.1, check only the DFU mode box only, once your iphone has gone in dfu mode ( black screen) abd message says done. Run itunes : shift + restore to CFW 4.2.1 created by PT 4.2
If you are using Mac, use the DFU mode from Pwnage tools.Last edited by iYeow; 02-28-2011 at 07:11 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

ok I'm just redownloading the stock firmware right now... I tried resetting it but it is stuck in restore mode.
I'm pretty sure I understand what you're saying but not completly...
if i just hit restore and let itunes do its thing will it automatically update the firmware/baseband?
wait, ok I'm using MAC
I have already created a custom FW with pwnagetools and this is the firmware I have been trying to restore with, using itunes
So, I also have Redsnow, but what exactly are you suggesting I do that I'm not already doing? I'm confusedLast edited by hirschab; 02-28-2011 at 07:23 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Do you need unlock, if you do then don't restore to stock firmware, just custom firmware.
In order for itunes to accept custom firmware, your iphone must use Geohot's exploit which is also called Geohot's DFU mode
If performing Geohot's DFU in Windows , you use rednsow to get into dfu mode.
If you are using Mac, then use Pwnage tools dfu which already has Geohot's exploit DFU mode incorporated in there.
Using custom firmware is to preserve unlockable baseband, so if you want restore to stock, then after restoring to stock, just jailbreak with GreenPoison, no need cfw and you will not be able to unlock at this current 4.2.1 baseband.Last edited by iYeow; 02-28-2011 at 07:31 PM. I am using mac, and yes, I do need unlock. I guess what I mean is that if I just restore to stock, will it take me up from 4.0.2 to 4.2.1? and upgrade the baseband?
In terms of using pwnagetool's DFU mode, I'm not sure what you mean, isn't it just instructions? ie, hold the buttons down for this amount of time, then release, etc... There isn't a software component to the DFU mode is there?

I do understand I think you just did nto understand what I'm saying.. I really do appreciate all the help I'm sorry I am frustrating you. It's very frustrating for me as well, believe it or not I have been trying for weeks just to get a jailbroken 3GS, this is the second 3GS I have bought, the last one I bought I was unable to unlock, and had to resell. Again, I really, really appreciate it, what I was trying to say was I think I have been putting it in DFU mode and I am still getting the error when I try to restore with iTunes using the 4.2.1 CFW created by pwnage tool
I also tried to create a custom 4.0.2 firmware with pwnagetool but it kept saying I was "trying to add the wrong firmware" when I tried to browse for it and put it in. So frustrated...

I'm on iTunes 10, and I'm not sure about the error code but I think it was 6000 I will check when I try this one last time
Thanks a lot for sticking with me, and ....
ok I think it worked! I guess I wasn't getting into DFU mode correctly. but the only thing is... when it booted, it wasn't the pineapple that showed up, but the stock apple logo. this is what happened with the other 3GS I bought, it was jailbroken but I could not get signal...
Right now, I am not getting signal, does the apple showing up instead of the pineapple mean it did not jb correctly?Last edited by hirschab; 02-28-2011 at 08:23 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Go to setting > general > about > tell me what is your modem firmware ?
If you see Cydia, then it is jailbroken.
Oh, you must install Ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock. Update Cydia first.Last edited by iYeow; 02-28-2011 at 08:29 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
