Bought a 3GS online, stuck on "connect to itunes" screen

After receiving my iPhone from an online seller, I tried to to restore it, but I got the iTunes error 1015. I don't know what the seller tried to do with the iPhone, but even an official update/restore won't work.

I'd like to restore it with an official build of iOS, but I would like to unlock the phone to work with tmobile as well.

According to the seller it runs 4.1...

How do I get this phone working again?

If u have 4.1 shsh stored with cydia, then point your hosts file towards cydia server and restore to stock 4.1.
If you don't have 4.1 blob, then you can only restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1.
