Turning off iPhone before DFU

I know this might have been asked before, but I can't seem to find the answer when I used search, so here goes:

What would happen if you try to put the iPhone into DFU mode (while jailbreaking it with, say, greenpois0n) and you did not turn off the phone? Would it brick it? Would it simply not go into DFU mode?

I'm just curious...and I don't know the answer.

Doesnt make a difference. DFU is DFU. I dont even follow the instructions the various tools give. I always just put it in DFU myself then press jailbreak/next.
