Default upgrading from 3.1.3 (already jailbroken/unlocked)

    Hi
I've got a 3GS on 3.1.3 (modem 5.12.01) that I successfully jailbroke/unlocked almost a year ago (using the spiritjb tool). Since it's all been working, I've avoided all iphone/itunes updates, but now I'm running into issues updating apps and my old itunes (9) needs updating too - it now whites-out trying to connect to the store.

So, I'm wondering about upgrading everything and jailbreaking/unlocking again:

    * Is this even a good idea?
    * (most importantly) How would I do this? Bear in mind I'm not
    an uber-tech, I'm a mere mortal - so I would need a
    step-by-step:
    * Does the sn0wbreeze tool update to a modded iOS4 that I
then I run the devteam tool on?
    * Will sn0wbreeze even work on a phone that's already
jailbroken and has Cydia etc on there?
    * When does the unlock happen (does it need re-unlocking?)
    * Once it's done can I then safely update iTunes?

As you can see from these questions, I barely know what I'm doing Any help would be appreciated - and if the safest thing is to stay stuck on 3.1.3, then so be it (but can I update itunes safely?)

    thanks!!

First open cydia and tell me what shsh you have saved. Download iTunes 10 you'll need it. Download sn0wbreeze 2.2. You can use sn0wbreeze to make a custom firmware of 4.2.1

I'll walk you through step by step once I know which shsh you have saved.

    hi iPittsburg
Thanks in advance for your help! So I have this at the top of my Cydia page:
    SHSH: iOS 4.0, 4.01, 4.02, 4.1, 4.2.1+
    (already that's a mismatch against my 3.1.3)

Maybe this is related, but if I try to refresh the Cydia database, I get this error:
"Failed to Fetch http://ispaziorepository.com/./Packages.qz HTTP/1.1 404 not found"

    Meanwhile, I've downloaded sn0wbreeze 2.2 (sn0wbreeze-r3.zip) and the itunes 10.1.2 (windows 64 bit) installer - and I'm standing by!
Let me know if you need any other info. Again:
    version 3.1.3 (7E18)
    modem firmware 05.12.01
    model MC135LL

    and thanks again!

Cydia saves your SHSH blobs only when Apple is signing each firmware. So as long as he opened Cydia when apple was signing each of the firmwares he is able to save them regardless of what firmware he is currently using. SHSH blobs are based on the uid(?) of the device. So Cydia takes that number goes to Apple and says I need the SHSH for this device running this software. Once Apple is no longer signing the firmware you can't get your SHSH blobs. I my case I just picked up a 3GS. The previous owner didn't save the SHSH blobs. So now all I can restore is 4.2.1 and I think 4.1. I ran tinyumbrella last night and I believe it said 4.1 which Apple must still be signing.

You have two options #1 restore to 4.0.1 bb upto 4.0.1 are unlock supported #2 use snowbreeze 2.2 create custom firmware and "restore" to that fw u've just created. Now u can unlock with ultrasnow

*custom fw u created keeps ur old bb, and ultrasnow can inlock it

For what it's worth, I don't remember ever manually upgrading anything (or even ever opening Cydia) after I got it all running last June - because for me it wasn't about Cydia or apps, it was just about unlocking my AT&T phone after moving to Europe.

(really looking forward to hearing from iPittsburg for a step-by-step on how I can get everything upgraded - unfortunately I don't know how upgrading the OS relates to iTunes relates to Cydia, what exactly the SHSH or a "bb" is, whether the custom 4.2.1 is stable.... Basically I don't know anything, really. Is there some online resource I could read to educate myself?)

Last June would probably get all of your shsh blobs saved. Regardless you have them and that is what counts. There are a couple of options that you can use.

1.You can go the safe easy bet and go to 4.0.1 and use jailbreakme and then goto ultrasn0w for the unlock. This will require the use of tinyumbrella. It will update your BB to 5.13.XX but is still unlockable.

    2. You can go all the way to 4.2.1. Use Sn0wbreeze to create a custom firmware that will preserve your bb. After you get the jailbreak you can reinstall ultrasn0w to get your unlock(edit). Using sn0wbreeze will preserve your current baseband.

There are more options than this. I just gave you the really conservative and the latest and greatest.

For you is to keep it simple!! D/l tu open click save my shsh confirm you do have all the shsh u have said, now click on start TSS (make sure itune was close before u click start TSS if it was already open, close it and redo the steps open tu and them open itune. Once itune sees ur phone hold down shift key and click on restore. ( I Assume u have dl all the stuff on your desktop) then locate the 4.0.1 file and select then open it. Itune will now update it to 4.0.1 which will also update ur model firmware(bb) and it's unlockable with ultrasnow. But suggest u read up a little more before takin the plunge --

You are also going to need to download a copy of 3gs 4.2.1 ipsw. Open sn0wbreeze 2.2.1, browse to 3gs 4.2.1, select expert mode, click the blue arrow, sn0wbreeze will create a custom firmware and place it on your desktop called sn0wbreeze_iPhone3gs4.2.1, connect iPhone to computer, open iTunes, sn0wbreeze will help to put the phone into dfu mode so that iTunes will accept custom firmwares, in iTunes hold shift and select restore, iTunes will allow you to browse to the custom firmware you made earlier, select the sn0wbreeze_iPhone3GS4.2.1, iTunes will restore to the custom 4.2.1, once done restoring you should be on 4.2.1 and still have your 5.12.01 baseband. Here is a video guide you can also follow.
