Help! Desperate! Downgrading iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1
Hi Guys
I know I could have searched the forums to see if this has been answered before but i'm running out of time. This is my third iPhone in one month that has been unable to work for me. I've returned to Optus and been given two different replacements. So i'm really desperate because if I don't have a fix i might not be able to even get a replacement.
This replacement came with 4.2.1 already loaded on it.
It's an iPhone 4.
During a phone call the mic suddenly stopped working and I could not be heard on the other end.
Mind you, it works when using voice control.
So i figured that I need to downgrade, since my brother's works perfectly on iOS 4.0.2. I have come to understand that there is no untethered downgrade method from 4.2.1 to 4.0.2.
Is this correct?
If so, should I jailbreak my device? What will that do? As i said previously, this phone was given to me with 4.2.1 so can I still downgrade (using the tethered method)?
Is there any other advice you could offer? When will 4.3 from Apple be released? Should I wait or get another replacement?

Untethered jailbreak with GP at 4.2.1.
dpwngrafing firmware will not resolve your mic issue.

could you be more specific at all?
so downgrading my firmwire to say 4.0.2 will not fix the mic issue? but jailbreaking it with green poison will?
is it really that simple?

Do a restore again without a JB, make a phone call to test out your mic to see whether if it is ur ph issue or jailbreak issue
another way: if you still think GP JB is the issue , JB with custom firmware created by Pwnage tools 4.2 and test out ur mic, but I suggest u do the first method first.Last edited by iYeow; 02-18-2011 at 04:47 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

i know its not a hardware issue because the microphone works with memos and voice control
it seems like something in the 4.2.1 firmwire is shutting the mic off during a phone call.
i have tiny umbrella installed. not sure where to go from here.
my phone is no longer jail broken. and yes it was given to me with 4.2.1

like Annie said, you may not have any other shsh lower than 4.2 1, you can check by running TU ,plug iPhone in and click save shsh

I'd like to kindly point out I don't think it's a 4.2.1 issue. My iPhone(s) work fine on 4.2.1. It could be jailbreak related, in which case, I'm going to assume you've attempted a restore already and it did not fix the issue. I'm going to take a wild guess and say you restored from back up? If you did this, restore again, set the phone up as new, then jailbreak again.

come to think of it, i jailbroke it the night i got it but since the apps i downloaded did not install properly, i decided to restore it. the next day, during a phone call, it suddenly stopped working. does that mean it could have been a result of me jail breaking it the night before?
also, i checked my shsh blobs and i only have 4.2.1 on there. but if i saved my brother's iphone's shsh blobs from 4.0.2... could i use them??
as annie suggested, it might have been a hardware issue and so for that reason i decided to get ANOTHER (my 4th) replacement. by the time i get it back i am hoping 4.3 is released/that it works.
thanks for your help annie/yeow/onlinegamesnz

SHSHs are device-specific. I didn't suggest a hardware issue, I actually suggested to not restore from back up. I think it can be resolve if you set it up as new after restoring.

The OP still hasn't confirmed whether or not he has been restoring from back up. It has peaked my curiosity and I am really interested in knowing if that fixes the issue, which I'm almost certain it will assuming it isn't hardware-related

aww sorry annie. in my previous post i said i gave in and returned the iphone (to be replaced)
i think this is some major karma on by behalf, that when i return it, i realise the solution may have been right infront of me.
just a question, i restored from a back up so does that mean they will be able to tell that i've used jail break?

If you didn't leave any traces of jb it should be fine. Sometimes a back up will carry over a carrier logo even without jailbreaking again, but if you didn't have a custom carrier logo it should be fine.
