With a iPhone 4 it can be more tricky than that if you have used tiny umbrella. Tiny umbrella, by default, sets your hosts to cydia on exit. This will cause you to get a 1013 error when trying to restore to 4.2.1. Good for unlockers as it preserves the baseband, but bad for someone wanting to take it to Apple for a replacement. To fix it go into tiny umbrella, click advanced and deselect the box that says set hosts to cydia on exit. Then close tiny umbrella and try the restore again. Be aware this will update you baseband.

You star, I have been jaibreaking a new iPhone 4 with the latest pwnage tool but it lost its carrier settings as by default it activates it and I have an official carrier, so I tried a restore and got exactly this as I had run Tiny Umbrella just to check it out. At least now I know why...I was getting confusing results in google as the same error occurred when Apple updated to 4.2 so was about to try the terminal fixes mentioned in my google when I saw ur post. I did a new custom restore with out carrier activation and it worked a treat, new iphone 4 unlocked (official) and jailbroken! and thats with the latest BB..phew I thought I'd bricked it..
