    Thanks for the heads up.

I am using Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak my phone. I appreciate the ability to downgrade my iOS easily (which I did when 4.1 wasn't working well for me). There are a couple of questions that I have regarding jailbreaking 4.2.1:

    1) If I preserve the baseband, does Apple have the means to identify my preserved baseband remotely and void my warranty if Apple sees iOS 4.2.1 and an older baseband?

    2) Am I correct to conclude that if I update my phone to 4.2.1 using iTunes then jailbreak with Greenp0ison, I can not revert to a previous iOS because my baseband has been updated (or are the two separate)? I have no interest in unlocking my phone as I am staying with AT&T.

I am currently on iOS 4.0.2. I haven't had too many problems with it. What has been the consensus with 4.2.1 experience on an iPhone 3GS?

    Thanks for the input.

    Sorry for the delayed response

    1. It voids your warranty

    2. You can downgrade your iOS by following this method

    Thanks for the reply.

I understand that jailbreaking voids the warranty. I'm wondering about the previous reports that Apple was verifying basebands (during iOS updates?). If one uses a jailbreak that preserves the baseband, will Apple be alerted somehow through baseband verification? If a phone is still under warranty, one could presumably restore the phone to a non-jailbreak state and return it to the store if something should happen to it. However, if Apple is able to remotely discover the jailbroken state, then returning to its non-jailbreak state would be pointless.

Secondly, I was not able to make the custom boot logo as with previous versions. Is it not working at this time?

I don't think Apple would verify baseband information during the iOS. But they can easily spot a iOS device if its jailbroken or not. Till date I haven't taken any of my iDevice to Apple store for service, but I guess, they can spot it for your iPhone 3GS, if not for an iPhone 4.

The custom boot animation is available with 2.2. So try it out

Thanks again for the reply. I had read that if one needed to service a jailbroken iPhone, it is best to restore it to factory settings (if possible). The above post makes me wonder if Apple has the capacity to determine if a phone is jailbroken without actually seeing the device. Is it possible that Apple tracks people's phones (by app purchase, baseband verification, etc) and voids their warranty without letting the user know?

I saw the custom boot animation option, but it didn't allow me to create an animated boot or put in my own png file.
