Yep RC6, I run it, it goes into the white screen then says the jailbreak has failed. Could it be something to do with either the custom IPSW I used or?

    tether boot with redsnow first
until u get to homscreen and update cydia. a reboot will cos it into frozen apple logo, tether boot again . once everything is back to homescreen only then run GP to get untethered jailbreak

    check what is your baseband

you need to restore again, if the same custom firmware still give wifi problem , try another custom firmware.
now that ur iPhone is bootable, can u run tiny umbrella, plug iPhone in and click save shsh , I want to see what shsh blob u have

Ok will do. I'm restoring to a different custom firmware. Will keep you updated.

Does the wifi problem occur with some custom firmwares? If the two I've tried don't work could you recommend one to me?

When I go into settings, I have no wifi, no bluetooth, and there's no modem firmware displayed. After a while the phone just decides to reboot itself.

I can't save the SHSH or see the phone in tiny umbrella. I'm very very confused

Run tiny umbrella, go to advance tab and uncheck set hosts file to cydia, save it and close it.
now restore to stock fw of 4.2.1, if you still can't restore and ended in recovery or error
1002, then you have a hardware problem. If you end with error 1015, then you can proceed to restore again to cfw

I know, but by default tiny umbrella will set hosts file towards cydia. If you want to find out if you have any shsh blob lower that 4.2.1 , it will not help if you can restore, if you can restore to stock 4.2.1, then your iphone is hardware problem free.
I am trying to troubleshoot if you have a hardware problem.
By the way, if you want to find out shsh blob, then you have to retrieve your ECID and input into tiny umbrella.
Follow this guide to find your ECID : here
