how to tell jailbreak type on used iPhone 4
I just bought a jailbroken iPhone 4 and was wondering how I can tell whether it was an tethered/untethered jailbreak?
The phone does not come up with the emergency call screen, like my iPhone 3G did when I got it. (But then again my 3G was not jailbroken when I got it)
The phone shows No Sim card when I turned it on, but I can swipe the uunlock to view the home screen.
Or should I just restore everything and start from scratch?
If so, what is the best way to do this?
Thanks everyone

Before doing anything go into settings>general>about and tell me the version. Can you turn it off and back on by itself? If so then you have an untethered jailbreak.

After rebooting does the slide to unlock take you to the home screen?

Yes it does. Sorry I apologize for not mentioning that.
It appears that I can go into all the builtin apps, notes, settings, camera and stuff. Obviously the phone icon i settings is grayed out and shows No SIM
Thanks for the help

Yea. That is great news.
The previous user did not erase their pictures, contacts and stuff. Is there an easy way to erase all that stuff and restore all the settings back to factory?
It appears that the general settings, like screen brightness and stuff have not been changed. But I want to reset everything just to be sure
Thanks

Well you could go through and delete things individually it takes a while, but you wouldnt have to rejailbreak or you could restore the phone and that will wipe everything clean including the jailbreak and then rejailbreak after the restore.

I haven't taken a indepth look, but it appears that there a quite a few pictures, videos, and more contacts than I can count.
I will see about deleting the stuff manually.
But if it proves to be to lengthy, can you advise on method and steps to re jailbreak?
I do have greenp0ison. I think it is the latest, but I am not sure. I had downloaded it before I realized I couldn't use it on my iPhone 3G and kept it just in case.
Thanks for the help

If it does end up being too lengthy, Connect to iTunes and select restore, iTunes will restore the iPhone to 4.2.1
The untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4.2.1 was just released last week so the greenpois0n you have might be dated the new version can be found at GreenPois0n
Once restored open greenpois0n, connect iphone to computer, make sure the iphone is completely powered off, select prepare to jailbreak in greenpois0n, follow on-screen directions to place iPhone into dfu mode, once greenpois0n detects the iphone in dfu mode click jailbreak, the phone should begin to jailbreak and after a while reboot.

Ah ha, I do have an older version of greenp0ison. I never used it so it didn't matter. Thanks for the updated link
I will give this a shot. Will I still be able to boot to the home screen after unlocking without a sim?
I know I can't make calls, but it would be a huge help to get the phone basically setup to make the transition from my iPhone 3G as simple as possible. Especially since I will have to do it a little at a time between study for college
Thanks a bunch!!

Using GP will not activate (ability to get into the home screen), you will have to go to AT&T and get a microsim for your iPhone 4 to activate. They should give you a sim without any trouble.

How can I get one of those?
The local AT&T Store closed and it i and my time is limited with college. So it may be a week or more before I can get over there.

To get a microsim you either need to go to AT&T and have them give you one or cut down the sim you already have from your iPhone 3G. I would just wait until you get the chance to go to AT&T instead of cutting down the sim because it is a little difficult and you could potentially ruin your current sim and be stuck without phone service.

I am a little confused though. If AT&T gives me a new micro-sim, how will I keep my old phone number and account?
I thought you had to use the sim they gave you regardless
Thanks

Currently with your iPhone 3G you have a regular sim card, the iPhone 4 requires a microsim (which is about half the size or a regular sim card). AT&T will activate a microsim so that it will have your phone number and account attached to it. Then you insert the new microsim into your iPhone 4 and good to go.

I knew they had to do something to keep my old number
Thanks
I did the restore in iTunes to iOS 4.2.1 but when it completed I got this error:
The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1013)
Since I had no idea what was going on. I proceeded anyway to unlock with greenp0ison rc6 final.
The phone powered on, but since I don't have a microsim yet it just displays the message "no sim card installed"
Any ideas?Last edited by tonyvr4; 02-12-2011 at 03:35 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

You Jailbroke it with greenpois0n. Does it have slide for emergency?
-

Yes it does have the slider for emergency and if I push the side it goes into emergency call.
The reason I am concerned is because of the error in iTunes

error 1013 is common when restoring an iPhone 4 to 4.2.1 but since you are not in connect to itunes mode I think you're ok. Here is a link concerning error 1013 if you feel the need to restore again Fix iTunes Error 1013 When Updating iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 | Redmond Pie
