Ok so I tried to jail break my phone with redsnow and it didn't work it kept coming up with errors. Now my phone is stuck on the connect to itunes screen. I tried some of the steps to get it back but the DFU isn't working and it keep rolling back to recovery mode. Like I said I am not savy with this stuff at all, I can follow direction well but some of this stuff is over my head...Any help with this would be awesome. I am to the point of just getting a new one. I have a 3G and the last software version was 4.2.1.
Restore your iPhone in iTunes. Download a copy of iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore and put it on your desktop, download a copy of redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 both can be found at iPhone Download Blog
Open redsn0w, when prompted to browse, browse to iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore select next, choose install cydia, next again, make sure phone is connected to computer and powered completely off, next again, follow on-screen directions to enter dfu mode, redsn0w should begin to jailbreak.
Well I did all that and it gets to the Installing Activation Bundle with the pineapple on the screen along with the thinking icon. I am going to give it a little while and see what happens.
Ok I spoke too soon. It did its final gig and bow it is back to the plug in itunes screen on the phone...WTF!!FML!!!
This really blows because I can't just take it down the street to a buddy and have him fix it because I am in Afghanistan. I am only trying to unlock this damn thing because ATT doesn't have real good service over here(sarcasm).

I have rerun the redsnow twice and it still goes back to the itunes connect screen. I think the Ipad baseband was put on it, not real sure. I am at a loss right now.

It doesn't have those options on my MAC. I am about to give up on this thing but I know it is something simple...If after I get this fixed will I be able to hook it up to Itunes?
Ok I have tried everything you said right down to going into xp2 mode and I still get the itunes connect screen...I think I may just give up. My phone is f ed
I think you just might have the ipad baseband installed. In that case, you will need to find a custom firmware of 4.2.1 that already has the ipad baseband installed and place it on your desktop I can not give you a link for one because links to custom firmwares are not allowed. You need to use redsn0w, but when selecting options just choose "just enter pwned dfu mode right now", now open iTunes while holding down shift press restore and browse to the custom firmware of 4.2.1, iTunes should restore now.
I know that one that I used is on mega upload, other than that I'm not sure.
Since you have a mac you can create a custom firmware with pwnagetool. Here is a link to guide if you want to try your hand at making your own custom firmware instead of searching for a long time. Disregard step 7 though.
Ok so I built the custom firmware. Now I have a guy on my iphone with his hands in the air and some language I am not sure what it says. I saw that even though the phone is restored it will still come up on itunes with the 1015 error. Now what to do I want to leave it like it is incase I need to do something else or can I just unplug my phone and start using it. Or do I need to go into redsnow and boot in tethered mode. Anyway I will wait for a response. I am having a hard time finding some of the posts I was looking at yesterday. Thanks for all the help from everyone
