Best strategy to upgrade jailbroken Iphone4 on 4.1

I have an iphone4, jailbroken with limera1n on 4.1. Cydia shows shsh for 4.1, 4.2.1, and 4.2b3. I'm not sure if it makes sense to update software now or wait for 4.3 (probably wait.) But whatever I do, I'd like to do without having to reload everything again. Is there a good backup program for jailbreak apps? And what's the best plan of attack. Do I have to update to stock then rejailbreak or is there a way to straight update and stay jailbroken?

No when updating (changing firmware) it gets rid of the jailbreak. Pkgbackup is a good program to back up all of your cydia apps, but might not get everything.
