Please Help with Iphone 4 Upgrade Process

Hello,

I am not the most tech savvy person, so I was hoping to get idiot-proof instructions on how to upgrade my Iphone 4 software to a newer version, as lately it is becoming a bit buggy.

Details: I live outside of the US, so I cannot use Verizon or ATT, therefore I need an unlocked and jailbroken phone.

Currently I have an Unlocked and Jailbroken Iphone 4.
iOS/Version: 4.0.2
Modem F/Baseband: 01.59.00
Installation for Windows needed.

I believe there are possible upgrades available, but I know I do not want to upgrade my Modem Firmware, nor do I want to upgrade to a version that does not have a jailbreak and/or unlock available.

Any help is appreciated.

first thing is does your Cydia say you have SHSH files saved for 4.0?

Ok, found out that I needed to check with Tiny Umbrella, which I had. Yes, I had SHSH 4.1 saved in Tiny Umbrella, and just saved it again for shits and giggles.

k, if u only have 4.1 SHSH, then you can only restore to 4.1 or higher. = no unlock. just try to hang tough till the latest unlock is released.

can anyone else shed some light?

Can I not find and download the correct file from somewhere?

The following only applies to iPhone 4 to preserve your BB
at 4.2.1
Run TU, plug iPhone in, click save shsh
Once you see 4.2.1 shsh blob
Run TSS server, leave it running
Now Run iTunes: shift + restore to stock 4.2.1 fw
Error 1013 pops up, you are in
recovery mode
close error box and close itunes
Run GreenPoison to jailbreak
once done your bb is still at 1.59.00 so u can unlock with ultrasnow and have an untethered jailbreak as well.

Does anyone else agree with this? Thanks iYeow for the help, I just want to be absolutely sure, which I imagine you can appreciate. Also, you said "stock 4.2.1 fw", where can I obtain this stock firmware?

Dude, you are killing me, so much for idiot-proof, you have me searching all over. If it works, you should have an easy step by step process. No offense, I do in fact appreciate the help, but from reading this post and also the one you helped out with for al iraqi, your directions lack specifics.

TinyUmbrella. Start TSS Server.

Shift+restore to stock firmware 4.2.1.

Receive error 1004, 1013, or 1015.

Run Greenpois0n. Be sure to hold home button all the way through the codes until finished.

Open loader. Install Cydia.

Open Cydia. Install Ultrasn0w.

If you happen to be stuck on emergency call screen after greenpois0n, run Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8.

Point to stock 4.2.1 ipsw.

Select Cydia.

Proceed to follow on-screen instructions.

When finished, run greenpois0n on it again to untether it.

Open Cydia and install Ultrasn0w then to unlock.

Download TinyUmbrella from thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com

Download greenpois0n from greenpois0n.com

Download Redsn0w from dev team's blog

Download stock 4.2.1 ipsw from MMi's Downloads section or felixbruns.de.

I am very sorry if I offended anyone, that was not my intention, though I used strong language (a product of being from NYC). I havent started the process yet, will do that now, but thanks to iYeow, i.Annie and the others who posted in an attempt to selflessly help me!

A little problem, when I go to hit shift + restore and select the ipsw file from my desktop, it doesnt show. I assumed this was because it was zipped, so I extracted all, and then had the file showing as a normal ipsw file on my desktop. Then upon trying again, selecting the file did not start the process, it only took my into the folder to select another, which were all blank.

You shouldn't unzip it. You need to rename the .zip to .ipsw. It should have a white cube-like icon. Or download it again with firefox and it should be in the right format.

do not extract but just rename .zip to .ipsw

Downloading it with firefox will put it in the right format if you're doing that already, so that should be fine.

Ffox worked, restored, which set the phone into locked state. I tried using GP rc6 to jailbreak, things looked to be going well, but I cannot get past the end of the jailbreak to complete. It says jailbreak complete on my pc, but my iPhone screen has all the code showing, with the last line saying "panic: We are hanging here..."

I have tried 3x and same thing. Pls help

What do you mean by locked state ? Did you jailbreak from emergency sceen ?
