You can try pkgbackup through cydia but Ive heard people say that it does not get all cydia apps, I didnt have too many cydia apps so I just wrote them down and re-installed later.
Yes unfortunately sn0wbreeze only supports up to 4.1

Ah right I'm with ye. So for the moment I'd be better of just going to 4.1 or sticking as I am. I am sorry people. Hoping to learn fast. Is upgrading your baseband not recommended.
Yes staying at 4.0.1 is fine, or you can go to 4.1 its all up to you. Upgrading baseband is not recommended because only certain basebands can be unlocked. However iPhones that came unlocked from the factory always stay unlocked regardless of baseband.
greenpois0n is a jailbreak tool only, it does not help update your iPhone. If you were already updated to 4.2.1 greenpois0n would jailbreak your phone. You can update directly through iTunes if you would like but I'm not sure if your iPhone is factory unlocked or not.
i got my network provider to unlock my phone i got a text of apple to say to connect to itunes and then it said your iphone has been unlocked by apple..your grand the more info the better.thanks for hanging in lol
Ok so here's what I was gonna do. Correct me if anything is wrong. Transfer my apps to iTunes. Backup my Cydia apps. Update to 4.2 via iTunes. And use greenpoison to jailbreak. Even if it does lock the phone is on the network I'm on. Is that all good. Won't mess with my baseband or anything.
If you do a regular update through iTunes it will change the baseband, but since you just called your network provider and apple unlocked your phone previously, I dont see any reason why apple would not unlock it again if updating does lock it.
Changing baseband to the ipad baseband(6.15) loses gps. <-- [You dont need to do this, its for people who can not get a factory unlock.] If you update your iPhone regularly through iTunes your baseband will change from 5.13 to 5.15
