Cant jailbreak iphone 3g

I have an iphone 3g (4.2.1) but i cant jb it with greenpois0n or redsn0w!
First tried it with gp but it doesnt recognize its gone into dfu mode. I have tried it about 20 times now but nothing, yet when i did it with my ipod touch it recognised it straight away and is working fine.
So i tried my 3g with redsnow and i get to the part with the download icon on the screen of my phone then i get an error message on my pc saying the programme has stopped working.
I have watched loads of tutorials and as far as i know im doing it correctly but i just can jb my phone!

Any ideas anyone?

Hold down home and sleep to reset and try again. Ive had to run redsn0w a few times to get a couple 3GS' Make sure you have the most current redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 also.

I have the that version of redsn0w but i still get an error message saying the programme has stopped working just after the download icon appears on the phone.
I also tried the 0.9.6b4 version but exactly the same problem.
Any ideas anyone??

When I say I had to try a couple times, one time in particular it took me about an hour for the jailbreak to finally work. Try re-downloading redsn0w. You should be able to jb with greenpois0n though, try using a different usb port since it didnt recognize dfu mode before.

Redsn0w issue: open redsn0w, open task manager, right click redsn0w and click set affinity. Unchecked CPU0 and redsn0w should be fine.

I just tried that but i still get the same problem - redsn0w stops working half way in.

I tried it with both 0.9.6b4 and 0.9.6rc8 versions too.

Try another computer. If another computer doesn't work you're doing something wrong.

when u run redsnow in xp2 compatibility mode , did u browse to stock 4.2.1 fw to jailbreak ur 4.2.1 3G iphone

Could someone please post a direct link to the correct version of redsn0w or greenpois0n to jailbreak my iphone 3g 4.2.1 and a direct link for the correct firmware i should use aswell just incase i've been doing something wrong or useing the wrong versions. Im sure i've done it right but something is wrong somewhere cuz everything i've tried hasnt worked.

When i try to to jb with greenpois0n it doesnt seem to recognise its in DFU mode. I follow the instructions on the countdown exactly and it just says try again. I've also tried it while the phone is still turned on cuz i seen it done like that on youtube. Ive tried it about 50 times now but still no luck! Yet when i did it with my ipod i did it first time.

Thats what i do but it doesnt seem to recognise its in DFU mode.
I shut down hold the sleep button, then the home button etc as the instruction says for the correct amount of seconds, release the sleep buton. I get the apple logo appear and i hear the alert sound on my pc so i know somethings happening - then its a blank screen and gp still says waiting for DFU and i get the option to try again.

I seen this on the forums so im not the only one but i still dont know how to solve the problem: Cant enable DFU mode

Redsn0w stops on the 'downloading jailbreak data' icon with the big green arrow. Once it got to the pineapple man logo but stopped there too.

I was told it wasnt working to do with windows vista so i've now tried greenpois0n on a seperate laptop with windows 7 but that still doesnt recognise its in DFU mode. I didnt get chance to try redsn0w on that laptop though.

Obviously i get my phone back out of DFU mode each time and still use it but its frustrating not being able to JB it

Nope that doesn't have anything to do with it, that has more to do with Unlocking.

Also, I've heard that greenpois0n doesn't work well with iPhone 3G
