IPhone 4 Jailbreak question! Don't want to mess anything up!
Hey, I just bought an Iphone 4 with the firmware 01.59.00 and its running 4.1. I need to jailbreak and UNLOCK this phone as I use Tmobile as my carrier. I know unlocking is easy and you just do the ultrasnow repo666 on cydia right? But first is jailbreaking. I wanted to know what is the highest version I can go with this phone and still be able to unlock it? 4.2? 4.2.1? I just want to make sure I do not mess up the unlock. Last question would be where is the best guide to jailbreak the phone. I like following the guides just to make sure I do it right. Anyone who helps me will get thanked!!!

You can jailbreak right where its at with redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 and a iphone 4 4.1fw (both can be found at iphonedownloaadblog.com ) or you can update to 4.2.1 and keep the 1.59.00bb by using pwnagetool if you have a mac. I would just jailbreak where it is and unlock with ultrasn0w.

Using pwnagetool will create a custom firmware that will update the firmware but not update the baseband. Once your custom firmware is made you would connect your iPhone to your mac and use redsn0w to "put into pwned dfu mode" then open itunes it will detect the iphone in dfu and say it needs restored, while holding option select restore, itunes will allow you to browse to the custom firmware you made, select the custom firmware, itunes will restore to the custom firmware but it will keep the baseband at 1.59.00
^that guide is pretty helpful tooLast edited by iPittsburgh; 02-10-2011 at 12:03 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I actually am running into a problem. I was able to do the whole Tiny Umbrella thing and I got to the jailbreak step listed here iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 Using Greenpois0n (Mac) [4.2.1] However, everytime I do it the jailbreak doesnt work. It just brings me back to the Emergency Call screen/connect to Itunes. Is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks!

You arent doing anything wrong. Greenpoison will not hactivate for you. So you either need to use a official carrier sim to activate or use redsnow 0.9.6rc8 to hactivate.

Sorry I forgot that you're on t-mobile. Use redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 and select install cydia once jailbroken with redsn0w re-run greenpois0n for the untethered jailbreak. redsn0w will hacktivate your phone since you're not using an official sim.

If you already ran greenpoison there is no need to run it again. You will stay untethered even after using redsnow to hactivate.

Okay sorry but just to clarify all I will need to do is use redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 to jailbreak and it will be untethered? Or is that not the case. I was a little confused between your guys posts. Also does my Tmobile sim have to be in the phone when I jailbreak? I didnt think that mattered so I just wanted to make sure. Thanks.

Jailbreak iPhone iOS 4.2.1 with RedSn0w
This guide will help you use redsn0w
You said that you have already used greenpois0n so all you need to do now is use redsn0w and you will be hacktivated and untethered. I normally put the sim in after I jb and unlock but dont think it matters.Last edited by iPittsburgh; 02-10-2011 at 01:08 PM.

Yes I already used greenpois0n and it just led me back to the emergency call screen. So when I use redsnow do I just check install cydia or do I check more like you said?
