Help with original iphone upgrade
I am using an iphone 4 - my wife still uses the original iphone.
It is unlocked and jailbroken but is on 3.0.? and i havent touched it in years - she has always been happy as it primarily was used to make calls.
Now she needs some apps which need a more up-to-date firmware and its also a little flaky and would probably benefit from being restored.
My first problem is I do not know which firmware to upgrade an original iphone too and which method to use to unlock and jailbreak it. Can someone advise?
My second problem is that for some reason the phone will not sync - biggest problem is the address book will not sync - is there a way I can save/extract the phone numbers from the iphone an other way?
Sorry and thankyou

You can restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1 to preserve your baseband. As to your syncing problem, you can only get back your contacts when you were able to last sync your iPhone

The last firmware available for the original iphone is 3.1.3. Depending on the apps she wants, they still may not be compatible for the firmware.
You can perform a restore to 3.1.3 and then use redsn0w I think it is version 0.94 to jailbreak and unlock. Also with redsn0w, even though you are jailbreaking 3.1.3, you will need to point the application to a 3.1.2 firmware for the jailbreak to work. there are also other files to unlock the device.
try here iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.1.3 Using RedSn0w (Windows)
For your syncing issue with contacts. try a syncml client from appstore. I have had success with those before.Last edited by qnc; 02-10-2011 at 05:03 AM.

As for the syncing issue, what kind of issue is it when you say it won't sync? Do you get an error? Or does it just not do anything? If contacts is the primary data you want, be sure in the info tab in iTunes that you have selected to sync the contacts to a third party.

Thanks the iclarified link was esepcially helpful (although I am on a mac-I found the right tutorial) I will try it later.
As to the sync problems I will need to double check what the problem/error message is - not sure it has been so long.
Thanks again.

Sorry about the windows link. I usually assume everyone is on windows, even when i expect everyone to be on a mac.
try synthesis syncml from appstore it is free, i hope it is still there.
I use a website called www.mobical.net after you set up the mobical account then set up the syncml client I have had my info on there for about 5 years(pre iphone days). usually when i blow away my contacts trying a tweak from cydia, i can get them back. the good thing about mobical is my pictures are saved as well. that was a welcome feature that i did not know about.Yeah I'm an iPhoneaholic!!
