Need Help - Stuck in Recovery Mode
So I got an Iphone (32 gb 3Gs) today that had version 4.1 on it. I am not sure if it was jailbroken or not.
I wanted to do a system restore and the itunes suggested an upgrade to 4.2 and after downloading a large file (about 40 min), during the process of upgrading, it got stuck during updating firmware and gave an error message (1015).
So, I did the google search and started discovering various things. I tried RecBoot to kick it out of the recovery mode without success. Then I learned about tinyumbrella and found that it didn't find any shsh saved for my phone.
Does this mean that I cannot restore my phone to any version 4 and above?
I have the system .ipsw file that itunes created for the first time before trying to do the system upgrade/restore. Can I get the shsh information from that using tinyumbrella or something else?
Lastly, I need to get this phone working soon. So even if I cannot restore it to software version 4, from what read, I should be able to do restore to a version 3.x - is that correct? In that case where can I download the restore file with older version.
I know I am asking too many question but appreciate your help.
Thanks.

Have you tried using tiny umbrella to "exit recovery"? shsh would be used to try to restore to a previous version like 3.1.3 but since there are no shsh saved you'll have to use 4.2.1 because its a 3GS you'll have to restore to 4.2.1 because apple is only signing 4.2.1 for the 3GS. Make sure to have current iTunes also.

Thanks for your reply. Not sure if I followed your suggestion though. I did try exit recovery but didn't do anything.
Can I restore to 4.2.1 without shsh? it seems that everytime I get to the firmware upgrade stage, i get the error message.
I do have the latest itunes.

Yes you can restore to 4.2.1 without shsh. Are you just clicking restore or trying to shift+restore?

I have tried both. I tried shirt+restore and then selecting the 4.2.1 restore file, it goes on for about 3-4 minutes and then gives me error message during firmware installation (1015). When I choose the original backup restore file (4.1) I get error much earlier (3194).
I even tried restoring to the 3.1.3 version and got stuck early on with error message (3194).

You're getting error 3194 because you're attempting to downgrade firmware, but you cant change it at will like the 3G. When in iTunes just click restore and let it download 4.2.1 from apple and restore itself. Dont choose the original backup restore file.

Tried that too. But error 1015 during firmware restore (after about 30 minutes of download and 5 minutes of restore activity) :-(

Do you know whether or not it was unlocked when you bought it?

Restore to a custom firmware of 4.2.1 that does not have ipad bb.

I though 1015 was a signing error. Make sure your hosts file is not pointing to cydia
The only thing you can load is 4.2.1 unless you use tiny umbrella and have already stored the SHSH for the 4.1Last edited by ZipZapp; 02-10-2011 at 07:03 AM.

Funny I was gonna say the same thing.
I think restoring to a cfw of 4.2.1 would be best at the moment.Last edited by iPittsburgh; 02-10-2011 at 06:59 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I don't know for sure but I think I may have seen Cydia on the screen (I had not heard about it until yesterday so didn't pay much attention).
Is there another post or instructions that walk through the custom firmware process to restore to the 4.2.1.
I was getting the 1015 error when I tried restoring with this version - so that means I have an Ipad bb? How do I make sure host files are not point to Cydia and custom firmware that doesnot have ipad bb?
Many thanks guys!!

You will need a mac to create a custom firmware for restore. But if you have windows you will need to find a custom firmware online to restore to. Youll want one that does not touch baseband it may say preserves baseband.

I downloaded a custom firmware that does not touch baseband (from IphoneRock.com). From that website it appears I need to turn off my iphone to update the firmware. and when I try that, it comes right back in the recovery mode.
Any directions on how to do the custom firmware update? I am working on Windows.
Thanks.

Connect your phone to your computer, let itunes recognize that it is in recovery mode and while holding down the shift key click restore and browse to the custom firmware, let itunes restore it. It should work, Ive have to do this twice with a 3GS.

It didn't work for me. I got an error 21. I tried it on two computers.
Is there another custom firmware that I can download and try with?
Thanks.

You have a 3GS right? I have a 4.2.1 cfw for 3GS but I cant post it here or pm it to you on mmi. The best thing I could tell you would be to look online for one.

It is 32GB Iphone and I think 3G was never released with 32GB so I am pretty sure it is 3GS.
So, if I get a 4.2.1 cfw (that does not change the baseband) - would I be able to restore the iphone without any back up shsh or other software (snow breeze, redsnow, recboot etc.)? Assuming I get past the error 21.
Thanks.

Search mega upload. Its on there. I think I'm allowed to tell you that much, not sure since the no custom firmware links allowed anymore.
