    Default iphone 3g upgrade

I am currently using an iPhone 3g with 3.1.3 and modem firmware 05.12.01. I want to upgrade to 4.1. Should I? And if so, can someone help me through the process. I'm new to all this so please be gentle. Thanks in advanced.

Some say 3.1.3 is best for iPhone 3G and others say 4.1 is just fine for a 3G

Im assuming you want to update without changing baseband. I see you're on windows so you'll want to download sn0wbreeze 2.1 from iH8sn0w.com and a stock 4.1 ipsw for 3g you can find it at iphonedownloadblog.com Heres a guide you can follow Sn0wbreeze 2.1 iOS 4.1 Jailbreak [Custom Firmware Windows] | Redmond Pie

Baseband decides whether or not an iPhone can be unlocked. The 5.12.01 bb is good for unlocking, and could fetch slightly more money if/when selling.

sn0wbreeze makes a custom firmware. Then you click restore while holding the shift key. Doing this will restore the phone completely wiping everything including photos, contacts, everything.

Will what slow your phone down? 4.1? It is known that 3.1.3 works best for iPhone 3G

You can follow these steps to restore your iPhone to 3.1.3

Download a copy of iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw from iPhone Download Blog and put it on your desktop.

Connect your iPhone, open iTunes, while holding down shift key click restore, you can now browse to iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw thats on your desktop, select iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw, iTunes will restore the iPhone to 3.1.3

kewl. So even with all the apps asking for 4.1 you think I should stick with 3.1.3? And again I say thank you because I know I would have pissed alot of other people off by now.

Yes some apps require 4.0 or above but there are so many apps that dont. It depends on what you prefer, do you want the phone to perform faster in general or have the certain apps that require 4.0 or above? You are welcome, there are many people here that are more than happy to help, I doubt you would have pissed off anyone.

Well then I guess I'll stick with 3.1.3 until someone comes up with a hack to speed my poor 3G up. Thank You.

Haha. Yes you will have to rejailbreak. For 3.1.3 I used redsn0w 0.9.4 , When using redsn0w, when it comes to the point for browsing for ipsw point to 3.1.2 iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw a copy of the ipsw and redns0w 0.9.4 can be found at iPhone Download Blog

Use the iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore when restoring the iPhone, and use iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore when jailbreaking with redsn0w.
