(iphone 3G) 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 problem

hello people ,

i have an AT&T locked iphone 3G on firmware v 3.1.2 and i want to update to 4.0.1 , after going through multiple threads , i tried to shift restore to 4.0.1 itunes gave me error 3194 , googled it and it told me to edit my host files , however this didnt work ! , can someone please lead me in a direction to get any 4X ( 4.0 ; 4.1 ; 4.2) version on my 3G with a Baseband unlock and a jailbreak ?

or a fixup to bypass itunes 3194 would be greatly appreciated.

Update itunes first.
Run redsn0w to put you into dfu mode.
Run itunes : shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1 for 3g.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w.
